But it wasn't one of the chaps yelling (at each other) that recorded it and complained. I suspect there is a lot more to this, and even though Dr Reti said he knew nothing of this, it sounds like lines were being drawn post election, and Nick may have expressed an allegiance which was quickly out of favor. And it surfacing now may be untenable. But that's just speculation.

It surely has to be the case, right? If bullies could be called out just for bullying, we wouldn't have the problems with bullying we do in our powerful institutions.

It's easy to talk about standing up to bullies when you've got nothing to lose, like when you're a scrub like me. But an effective bully knows to operate where people have too much to lose.

Nick Smith resignation: Judith Collins says she became aware of inquiry last year

Quote:
Smith had said he was advised on Friday that the inquiry and its details were leaked to media and were due to be released the next day.Collins said Smith had had previous conversations with her about him stepping down.

"He had spoken to me last year and said that he didn't think he was going to see out the whole of the term. He certainly was not happy being a list MP, having been 'Nick4Nelson' for 30 years and losing a seat at the election.

"He indicated to me then that he would be going at some stage, and I didn't realise that it would be on Monday."

A Politik article claimed she told Smith last Friday the story would be published this Tuesday in relation to his incident, and also claimed she warned her caucus early last month that media were about to break a scandal involving one of the party's MPs.

In response, Collins said it would not be fair to not let MPs know of any adverse stories in relation to them beforehand, but did not specify what, if anything, she had told her caucus or Smith.

"Whenever I hear of any stories that may be adverse to any of our MPs, I will always let them know. And I'll let them know because I will not allow MPs to go stumbling into a situation where they have no warning."

She said any discussions with her caucus were confidential.

Growing up in South Auckland I found school leadership were very out of touch with the experiences of their students.

I see nothing has changed:

Free lunch debate: Can schools tackle hunger and dependency at the same time?

Quote:
Similar arguments appear to inform a decision by Ōtara-based Yendarra School principal Susan Dunlop, following consultation with parents and staff, to decline the chance to join the free Ka Ora, Ka Ako school lunches programme.

A core value of the school was "rather than giving a man a fish, give them a hand up", Dunlop told The Spinoff. "We don't give out things for free as we don't think it does anything for people's mana".

The school has its own lunch initiative. In 2008, it launched a drive urging parents to only provide students with healthy food, alongside a "no fizzy drink" policy instituted a year earlier.

Dunlop said it had proven to be a huge success and as a result, "99.9 percent of parents" opted not to take up the free lunches programme when it was suggested in a survey late last year.

Hmm. I smell some form of BS there. My assumption is that they have worded it in such a way that people wanted to say no.
Or they have spouted about how bad a look it is to accept something like this/made it a stigma for a child to have a school lunch

Does anyone find it odd how consistent the NZ political cycle is?

I'm sure, you take this time during the last cycle: about 1.5 terms for National, National could do nothing wrong, at least of consequences and Labour looked like it was nearly falling apart.

And now... it's just the same with the tables turned.

Am I just imagining this?

There's a reason why I'm easily triggered by stories about schools and teachers.

To be fair, if you're going to teach in a lot of schools in South Auckland, you'll struggle to survive without a certain degree of indifference to suffering.

I had a friend who did a masters in education, quickly fell into depression when she started working in schools. Thought she was doing the right thing starting off in more difficult areas. She retrained as a librarian.

Danylmc in te Spinoff today:

Quote:
(W)hatever is going on with National looks a lot like the collapse the Labour Party experienced during its first two terms in opposition. And that, as everyone pointed out at the time, looked a lot like the trauma National experienced during the early years of the Clark government when Bill English led National to a catastrophic defeat.

It feels like there’s something deeper at work here with these repeating opposition meltdowns.

Oranga Tamariki to shut Te Oranga facility after leaked video of child assault

This is just typical repeat of the cycle. Anyone involved in the industry knows this is the norm. There'll be a bunch of puffery and nothing will change, until another story pops up.

All the while kids in these facilities will barely notice anything changing. Certainly they won't encounter anyone with the training to understand what any kid goes through growing up, how disruption to the development manifests, effective ways of responding to that disruption.

I hear you. I only got into podcast listening when I started using the Overcast app, with its variable speed and "cut out silence" functions. If you listen to a piece at 1.5% speed and with all the pauses cut out, it flies by

Downside: listening to normal recordings now makes me feel like the person speaking is retarded.

What has democracy ever done for us anyway

At least the Mongrel Mob have demonstrated that it’s possible for a NZ business to develop a coherent product strategy with vertical integration and strong effective messaging. It’s not like they’re announcing “KiwiMeth” with targets that will never get met.

Nah, I'd say that as dictionaries continually revise to better reflect how language is used in society then this group won't like them.
