Well apparently it was for "services to rugby". For 20 years he coached at top-level rugby including ABs (awesome winning %, three Grand Slams), Wales and the British Lions. Plus he was IRB Coach of the Year 5 times. Not to mention previous to this he spent 20 odd years coaching Auckland Grammar and Kelston Boys.
So despite this lifetime of service I do find it interesting that when it comes down to it the knighthood hinged on one game.

I wouldn't say it hinged, but since it's clear he's acheived the pinnicle of his career (and isn't going to be going for another cup) it is an opportune time to award it to him.
