Aussies, is half a billion dollar war memorial as absurd as I think it is?

Daayum, no wonder everyone is moving to Aussie. So much cash to blow on nothing. You guys must barely have to work to make ends meet.

It’s federal election time in a month or so and the Coalition govt is opening the floodgates on bribecentives. “We forecast a bajillion dollar surplus AND middle class tax cuts... but only if we win the election. Vote Quimby!”

I never crossed paths with Hawke but the impression I've always had of him is of a guy who could walk into any pub in the country and he'd be told his money was no good. Yeah yeah Rhodes scholar Oxford philosophy politics economics transformational Prime Minister whatever. He was intellectually brilliant, a politician, AND everyone's mate. Is such a thing even possible in the 21st century?

Given the options, I am glad Australia hasn't changed for the sake of change.

Our local Independent got in (Helen Haines) so we're happy out here.

Australia is better off without effective government right now. A switch up would cause a lag during the transition, instead of allowing the incumbent government's grift gain momentum.

ELI5 why there's 2 Liberal Parties?

LS: We can but dream that Federal government closes down and demonstrates how local council + state government can do a better job without them.

I think it was during a Sam Harris podcast I heard it put best when describing modern elections. I paraphrase: "People don't vote FOR people they like, but rather AGAINST people they don't like."

From my personal perspective, Shorten lost my vote when he took a default opposition stance against the Ass Access bill, lots of hot air saying what people want to hear (digital privacy is important), then voted in support of the bill. What the fuck? Another empty suit.

Yep. AU Labor lost my vote with the "censored Internet feed" mindfart a decade ago and has never regained it. My vote went for a local independent in the lower house and Green in the upper.

Fuck the Coalition for being cunts and fuck Labor for being useless.

Edit update: or, as I said in 2007:

Classy government waits:
- For election to be over
- For US to make it OK to arrest Assange whistle-blower and public enemy #1
- For news media to redefine what journalism means in wake of Assange arrest
- For manufactured consent to make half of us cheer as ABC gets raided for its "illegal leaks", and half of us are wondering how to get off this train.

Insight into why Aussies voted back in a government it seems to clearly hate, anyone?

Is that the role of government in Aussie? They elect those who they love to hate? Just a consequence of a two party system?

I was on a group call organised out of Canberra for all the Chamber of Commerces across Victoria.

The most productive thing Scott Morrison said on that call was "If you are not talking, put your microphone to mute!"

Other than that, the call was a complete waste of time. But no doubt they'll claim they've given everyone the opportunity to request assistance. Our area has mostly just seen smoke, but the Summer earnings are completely gone. How many businesses must be wondering if this whole disaster will happen all over again next summer, and they won't earn money for a whole 2 years.

Well given all the low-lying dry scrub and lose crap that the Greens didn't want disposed of is gone now, it might not be as bad!

(Yes I know - that's a forlorn hope and a sick joke).

Glenys Beauchamp destroyed notebooks on public service career

Quote:
Labor Senator Katy Gallagher has written to the public service commissioner asking for an investigation into outgoing Health Department secretary Glenys Beauchamp's destruction of her notes and notebooks.
I don't follow Aussie politics too closely, but from what I've seen, this will go absolutely nowhere.

This is the most Australian story of the day: the guys in the #1 and #2 jobs at the agency in charge of investigating corruption have decided they want to spend more time with their families after they were each outed as having received mysterious unauthorised payments from ooh look at that interesting thing over there
