Should be some vid of the Beagle hanging with his mates on an upcoming episode of Animal Academy - on TVNZ 6 or 7 - in the next few months. He'll be the one trying to playfully roger the younger ones to assert his dominance by going facial on them.
Might also be a goateed stranger wandering amongst the crowd too. |

I discovered quite by accident that my cat Trouble likes to be a shoulder cat. Was holding him normally, next thing I know he's scooted up my chest and is sitting across my shoulder, and eventually walking down my back! :)

Quick iPhone photo!
No, he wasn't licking himself, he was sleeping like that, with his head resting on the bed between his legs. It's almost like he challenges himself to find the strangest ways to sleep. /edit; ps, those Bengles are adorable. It's such a pity that my Ocicat is adorable-er, though! ;D Last edited by mpx : 10th May 2010 at 21:31. |

I'm seriously thinking about putting together a business plan to start up a doggy day care in Lower Hutt.
It will have a lot of technical/gadget spin to it, and a lot of owner education as the base. |

A while back someone asked me to video my rabbit going crazy with his football after I posted (in OMG, I think).
I have failed. I did find a video today of the same sort of carry-on from another NZ rabbit, only without the ball (sound not needed - it's lame): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F514GHYOq_c |

Whats the deal with having a bunny, do they crap all over the place, or can they just be like a cat and give them a litter box?

Step 1. Place rabbit in cage and wait for it to choose which corner it wants to go to the loo in Step 2. Put litter-box in that corner and wait a day or so. Step 3. Put litter-box where you want the rabbit to go to the toilet in new environment. * Rabbits digest food twice by eating 1g pooh (cecotropes) and letting it go through again. That bunny looks like it's insane from being institutionalised.
Speaking of pets... the people over the fence have a kune kune. I feel kinda sorry for it. This is an apartment, albeit and ground floor one with a little back yard which is completely decked over. I would've thought that kunes, like all piggies, like to roll around in the dirt and shit... It's got a little kennel, but sometimes I see it standing outside by their ranch slider, gazing longingly through the glass, grunting and oinking quietly away. I wonder if it's cold. Someone should knit it a tea cosy... but, like... a pig cosy.

http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/poop.html Another advantage to litterbox training: if they drop their cecotropes, rather than eating them as they come out, they can go back and have a snack later. Last edited by chiQ : 29th June 2010 at 10:50. |

Dog owners: How much does it cost to look after a German Shepherd a year? approx
|
29th June 2010, 13:31 | #1501 |

Don't ask about a specific breed, ask about the size of the dog.
I.e. German Shepard = Large breed Which is about: 3 1/2 cups of food a day (~$140 every 3 months) yearly vet visit (~$70) worming (every 3 months @ ~$40 per year) flea (every 2 months @ ~$30 per 6 months) any kennel visits ( Per night ~$15) any doggy daycare ( per day ~ $30) poop bags (100 for $10) new toy (they usually go through one a year) (~$30) Then you've got cost in time: One good 1 1/2 hour walk or two 45min walks per day Mental stimulation during the day - 1-2 hours. Familiar with German shepards? Don't want to be telling you stuff you don't know - but they're harder to train (esp relative to say, a lab), which can suck more time. So not just size-of-dog costs, but potentially more time/stress costs. Not every shepard, but you're more likely to have a challenge than with many other breeds.
I'm not particularly familiar with them, but brother-in-law has one and is right into them, so regurgitating info I remember him mentioning. |

I would rate a German Shepard above Labrador in terms of intelligence over all, but they're harder to train traditionally as they are not as food orientated as a Labrador (which is why there is a perception it is harder to train them).
You can find out what motivates them by getting a high pitched squeaky toy, food, and pats/affection with two people and see which is the highest driver for the dog. |

Ugh, missed a paragraph: Breed doesn't really count when you're trying to estimate costs of a dog. Size is a larger factor than breed.
You may need to pay a little bit more for a dog with long hair in grooming tools, but it may eat less, etc. It's the sort of thing that balances out, especially when you're asking for an estimate of costs. |

Breeds that have been bred as working dogs have been selected for intelligence over hundreds of generations. No surprise that a breed like the German Shepherd is intelligent.

Dog has a badly ruptered crucial knee ligament.
Vet says four options, two of which are different surgeons for big bucks (partial and full knee replacement, $1500-2500), glucosamine injections and joint food diet (which she didn't inspire confidence with), or new dog. Has anyone else had to deal with this or similar? |

Labrador ?
Mum has been through this, $1500 per leg, Labrador Retriever. Dog recovers to about 90% but has a happy life peeing with a slightly different approach. Just need to watch out for it on uneven surfaces when running, but you can pretty much count on the dog knowing best. |
