I started on the series a very long time ago now, but it's generally recommended to read the stories in chronological order, rather than publication order. So that's starting with Shards of Honor, then Barrayar (Cordelia centric) before finally getting to the first Miles book, The Warriors Apprentice (ignoring the novella's and short stories, that is).

This is how I read them and it's Lois's own recommendation.

Yup, that's a good way to go. I don't think I've yet read the books that come before Shards of Honor, to be honest!

Oh boy, now that was a stinker....all of the Herbert Jr and Anderson additions to the Duneiverse were appalling. I'd like to know how much of the Hunters/Sandworms were actually from the notes Frank left behind...

I held on all the way up to Chapterhouse, desperately hoping to reclaim the glory of the first three. It's so easy for an author to lead you on after such incredible highs, even when your better judgement is saying "Dude, you know this is shit right? Right?"

Oathbringer is the shiznit. Gutted we had to wait so long given how prolific Sanderson is, but the wait was worth it!

Thriller At Its' Best.

The Red Daliah by Lynda La Plante

She wrote a lot of stuff like The Governor (sp?) and Prime Suspect.
Some guy emulates The Black Daliah murders in the U.S in the 40s
and thinks its a load of fun.
This is one of Lyndas' darker books.

Recent book that I enjoyed:
Daniel Suarez' "Daemon" and "Freedom TM"
(two volumes, but it's really only one book)
Good cyberthriller, despite a few technical inaccuracies that the pedantic side of me raged about.

Lightweight fantasy escapism of the moment:
Christopher Nuttall's "Bookworm" series.

I'm tempted to re-read the Ancillary Justice series again this summer. Maybe it's too soon, but the series is so freaking good. Also on the re-read list is Hamilton's Reality Dysfunction series.

I haven't read much new fiction in a while. Right now I've got a few things on the go at once:

Alexander Hamilton (biography) by Ron Chernow
In Defense of a Liberal Education by Fareed Zakaria
All the public domain short stories by Philip K Dick (thank you Gutenberg Project)
It by Stephen King
I also grabbed a bunch of the "Science Fiction Megapack" Kindle bundles from Amazon during the US Black Friday sale, lots of 20th-century SF short stories.

It's long enough since I last read It that the locations look different in my mind this time around. It's weird because I can still remember how I originally pictured the places while seeing them differently now.

I just finished Stoner - John Williams.

It's a story about a boy raised by dirt farmers in the early 1900s who goes to university. Written in the mid '60s.

It's an excellent book, but a hard read. I'd read a chapter every few months. It's painful, but fascinating which what is kept me reading.

The wheel of time series. On the second book and it's engaging but it sure seems like it takes ages to get anywhere.

I watched the 80's TV show, saw the movie, and played the text based PC game, but I'd never actually sat down to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so that's what I'm doing now. Absolutely love it.

Loved this series; finished it in stages over nearly 18 years It does get longwinded at times, but still enjoyable

For completeness, track down "...and another thing" and "The Salmon of doubt" if you can. The latter was posthumously pieced together from what they found on his various Macs.

Just finished my 2nd read through of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Enjoyed it just as much as the first read a couple of years back. So many 80s pop culture and gaming references.

The movie is out in a few weeks too, so hopefully they stay fairly true to the book, but with Spielberg at the helm, we shouldn't be too worried right

aaand, there is a sequel coming as confirmed by the Author late last year.

Just listened to Ready Player One on audible, not a bad listen and then followed it up with a read of Armada by Ernest Cline.

The Art of War. A surprisingly relevant and easy read.

The introduction the copy I've got talks about how relevant it is in today's world. And it certainly is - from business to politics to international current events it's a little too relevant.

The Art of War is great. I also recommend.

My current reading:
- The New Human Rights Movement - Peter Joseph
- 12 Rules For Life - Jordan B Peterson
- The Daily Stoic - Ryan Holiday

and my favourite best current read....
- The Bitcoin Standard - Saifedean Ammous

Making News: The Political Economy of Journalism in Britain and America from the Glorious Revolution to the Internet - edited book.

Quote:
The work's underlying thesis, played out across the volume's eight chapters, is that the free-market approach favoured by contemporary Internet-focused journalists as well as by many of today's media business savants will ultimately prove incapable of producing the kind of reliable, high-quality reporting serious news organisations were expected to deliver prior to the technological revolution of the late-twentieth-century arrival of the Internet.

Really struggled with Armada. Seems a poor rehash of a single slice of Ready Player One.

His developing skills as a writer were overshadowed by the great quirky story of RPO, where as in Armada the storyline just doesn't carry him.

Andy Weir's follow up from the Martian - Artermis - on the other hand I found was an engaging story and good writing.

Obviously just my 2c.

On another note, if anyone enjoyed Starshoop Troopers, Old Man war or more recently Marko Kloos's Frontlines series, I'd highly recommend Jason Lambright's valley trilogy. The first book is average but the second and third book are a few of my favourites in the genre.
