Just came back from seeing it, also my first Gold Lounge experience.
Must admit it was the first film I'd been to in a while that had me groaning at the dialogue and wishing it would hurry up and finish. Not bad, but I wouldn't have given it more than a 6/10 myself. Pixie

It could be poor writing, or perhaps working sanitation is a niche that spares him most of the harshness of the environment with a buddy that helped him cope? If that buddy got killed on his first mission, that might explain his flip out, then training kicked in once he was fighting for what he felt was right?

or maybe the early training was all sims or discussion rather than actual killin/shooting and as you say he just did odd jobs cause was shit at that (they said he had to get sent for "reeducation" i think..)
explainable and minor but yeah, struck me as odd how quickly he went to wholesale murder without mentioning anything or seemingly being bothered by it (the chick you could kinda understand cause i assume a harsh life) hopefully we see more of his backstory / mental state in the next 800films and spinoffs |

The young adult novel explains it a fair bit apparently. The stormtrooper that died, and the one that tells traitor (now known as TR-8R), were both in his unit

Saw it last night in 3D, loved it. Picking up on the few 'flaws' as already mentioned here and elsewhere couldn't be helped but during the movie I put them down as being expectantly critical and just enjoyed it.
Something about the repeated 'follow me/lets go' head motion given throughout the movie to bb-8 irked me but I guess this was a nod towards robots picking up on (in this case, not so-) subtle human body language.

The Rise of Skywalker spoileriffic thread
The Rise of Skywalker Is the Most Incoherent Star Wars Movie Ever Made
The saga’s ninth film, directed by J. J. Abrams, all but drowns in a sea of nostalgia and infinite plot points. ... (M)ay it be the last episode of a saga that should’ve ended long ago. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertai...review/603790/ |

Not to say it's Rian Johnson's fault, but swapping writers/directors seriously fucked things up, IMO.
You know when improv actors bounce a storyline between each other, continuing the plot based on what the last person said, but instead of being friendly, they're selfish and just continue with what they wanted, ignoring the input from the other improv actor? Yea, that.

I'll wait until I've seen it again, but max 4.5/10 for me after initial viewing, for many of the reasons OP listed.

So. I really enjoyed it. Did it tie up all lose ends? No. Did Ben get enough screen time given how awesome his character was? No. Was it necessary to make Lando super fucking creepy in the closing moments of the film? No.
But it was a great ride, some great content, Good lol's from C3PO, plenty of genuine emotion, and I never got bored.

Big messy plot, basically the whole movie tried very hard to undo Rian's mess.
Could be that I'm a lot older now trying to recapture that initial magic when I watched the original trilogy as a kid. I went with another 40+ SW lover and we took a bunch of kids 10 and under. They all loved it and thought it was amazing, the old guys agreed it was OK. |

I need to watch the prequels again for some fresh judgement, and context for a "best to worst" list.
I've seen TPM a couple of times, with the acknowledgement that they're really kids movies at heart, and try not to judge it too harshly, but always get so put off by the shitass dialogue and diplomatic plot that kids couldn't care less about, so it fails at being a kids movie, too. For AotC and RotS, I saw them once in the cinema when they first came out, and not once since. Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I think the TV series are so much better than the movies at exploring the SW universe. Rebels, Clone Wars, Mando. So so good, when compared to the quality of the movies.

I'm actually using the lockdown to catch up on Prequels, I haven't re-watched them since their theatrical release. I've stopped between 2 & 3 to watch the Clone Wars movie and series, which I've dismissed in the past.
There's a load of great content there that didn't have exec's fucking it up.

So much fantastic lightsaber choreography, which TRoS lacked. But TRoS had Babu Frik, so who's complaining?
