I gonna have to watch S11E02 of X-Files again - too much background noise at home. Awesome to see the return of Langly, and Dean Haglund must have been stoked to play Max Headroom - although apparently you still age in the singularity. Better than last week at least.

And I couldn't stop laughing when the baddies were supposed to be goodies, but had Russian accents because Trump outsourced.

Best of all, the wife commented that Scully looks really old - "She must be in her 60's now??" - compared to when she was in The Fall. I double checked and confirmed that Gillian is three weeks older than her.

Thumbs up

The good place season 2 and the way it riffs on / rips up the season 1 narrative.

Hmm. Been tempted, but I'm afraid of that idea being a bad one in case the series pales in comparison.

Just finished Dirk Gently, season 2. Based on a Douglas Adams book, it's Hitchhikers meets Doctor Who.

Very entertaining.

I'm enjoying The Tick. It'll never be as good as the original animated series, but it still captures the absurdity and irreverence without straying into the surreal.

Anyone who enjoyed Strike Back (up to and including Season 5; 6 was kinda shit) might enjoy The Brave. Very similar kind of show, also based around clandestine military etc etc. Still very "America, Fuck Yeah" in nature, but reasonably enjoyable

I'm a fan of J.K. Simmons so I might be biased, but this looks pretty good.

So watched the first couple of episodes of Altered Carbon and it's obviously a Netflix show (colour palette, narrative structure, staging - all "nicely" telegraphed in the intro sequence so you know what you're getting). Aside from that it's a mish-mash of cyberpunk themes without any nuance of how those things interact, held together with some pretty effects, an attempt at noir atmosphere and a bit of graphic violence.

So yeah, pretty close to the books I guess. I'm not a bit fan of the tail end of the cyberpunk movement (and this is technically well after the genre had already taken a bullet to it's spinal column).

Will probably watch the rest - it's decent enough bubble-gum TV - I guess it may improve but that's a 50/50 bet with Netlfix Original material.

The most interesting thing about the show (in my opinion) is how obviously it is stamped with the Netflix brand - from cinematography too dialogue it seems they're building their visual trademarks. Netflix is basically the same as CW, StarZ, HBO et al now.

I really enjoyed it. The characters were competent, the acting matched. It didn't have the depth of something like The Expanse, but it's cool a show, with some real feeling.

I’m 4 eps in and it’s really feeling like “the Dollhouse season 3 we never got”, even down to the casting. The producers have taken AC and tacked some other stuff on to it - the aforementioned Dollhouse, Dune, The Matrix, and something else I can’t put my finger on... Burning Chrome or Johnny Mnemonic? - but I’m digging it.

No complain of product.

Another show on Netflix I'm really enjoying is Travelers. I was reluctant at first, I generally don't like time travel, but they've done it well.

I knew the name sounded familiar so I looked into it, and yep I watched the first four or so episodes of Travelers when it first came out.
Didn't think too much of it at the time, might give it another go.

I'm watching Travellers, enjoy it enough to keep watching, but I think if it had of been a few episodes shorter for Season 1 I might have enjoyed it better.

Not sure what I feel about season 2 yet, only half way through it.

^^ Excellent.

Hadn't seen any posts about this...

Amazon Studios to Bring Iain M. Banks’s Culture to the Small Screen
https://www.tor.com/2018/02/21/amazo...-small-screen/

I'm both terrified and hopeful. Quote below informed the hopeful part - they seem to get what appeals to people about Banks' work.

Quote:
Dennis Kelly is eager to begin work on the series, stating, “Iain Banks has long been a hero of mine, and his innate warmth, humor and humanism shines through these novels. Far from being the dystopian nightmares that we are used to, Banks creates a kind of flawed paradise, a society truly worth fighting for—rather than a warning from the future, his books are a beckoning.”
On the other hand if they get around to The Player of Games they better not fuck that up and I need to know who to lobby to give the role of Jernau Morat Gurgeh to Idris Elba.
