ZiPhone has a bad reputation because it (used to?) modified the baseband or bootloader in a way that cant be undone. I think the generally preferred program to use these days is iLiberty. mactalk.com.au is the best local-ish forum for questions like this imo.

I've used ZiPhone for unlocking several phones, it works great now, it's the only really mature solution as far as I know.

The vodafone shops don't seem to know much about when they are getting the iPhones in stock yet.
Anyone heard details yet? and any prices? C |

So a friend spilt water on my 1st gen last night.... "attached device is not compatible". Think it's not recharging. Good think the new ones are coming.

Not a whole lot new on the hardware side of things (aside for the obvious), but the firmware 2.0 now that is shaping up and its something us jailbroken people have had the whole time anyways. Shame the camera isnt getting a revamp, even an auto focus and/or flash would really improve its averageness outside of sunlight. Still considering its a ipod as well as a phone the $199 (or about $250 nz) for the 8gbs is a steal! My bet is come november they will release the 32gbs one and push the 8gbs out the window, along with a 64gbs touch.

Do you any of you honestly believe Vodafone will have the iPhone for less than $600NZD for the 8GB model? C'mon

That $199US for the 8GB is a *subsidised* price when you sign up to a 2 year contract with AT&T. Based on that, Voda will likely have it for $400 on a 2 year contract or about $600 for outright purchase. Just look at their N95 pricing. |

If the iPhone plan is good then I'm sold. Otherwise its just another high end phone that'll rape you when you use all of its features.
I could live with 5GB and some Txt/Voice for $50-60 a month |

Apple have said that the US$199 will be the global price, not the AT&T price
|

yeah, let's just wait and see what Vodafone NZ does with that "global price".

The 'global price' is US$199 because apple have said "You can sell this, but you can't sell it for any more than we allow".
So Vodaphone won't be able to sell it for much more than $400 (+2yr contract). Apple won't retail them directly because they need Vodafone to subsidise the iPhones to get the price down and piggyback on the contract profits. |

US$199 != NZ$400
At any rate, I'm finally keen on one. |

Yeah, but whos to decide what exchange rate they use? It definatley won't be based on the current bottomed out US dollar.

Doh, I was just about to buy an iPod touch 8gb.
Now I will have to wait til july the 11th to see what the state of affairs is (I want the iphone for everything except its phone capabilities. If the touch had gps, i I would buy it now)

Apple control global prices quite well, go and try and buy an ipod from a retailer, they usually can't inflate the price or offer much of a discount (without permission from Apple).
Btw, we've just launched our iphone version of Drugs.com for healthcare professionals - www.drugs.com/iphone_pro.html |

Spoke to a clued up Voda rep this afternoon and we're looking at about $800 for the 16GB on pre-pay, around $550-600 on a 2 year contract.
Love to know which currency conversion rate they're using cos on contract it should only be about $400. and..yes...it will have Voda-Live crap. |

Unfortunately the $299US price is with a "new 2yr AT&T contract" so it may not be that far off. It's up to the providers to set the outright pricing. From the Voda site " iPhone 3G will be available via Vodafone on both prepay and contract price plans which will include great value data bundles. Other markets will follow later this year and full details of specific launch dates and price plans will be made available soon by individual Vodafone operating companies. Customers in Vodafone's 10 markets where iPhone 3G will be available can pre-register online and in retail stores in the next few days" |
