My house is only a few hundred metres from the nearest cabinet, but because of the way this area was subdivided, my actual cabinet is about 2km away in the other direction because I don't know why (my part is newer, as well).

Broadspectrum guy was happy to try it out and VDSL did sync, but it was slower than my ADSL, so we reverted.

Worth double checking that they even know which cabinet you're on.

^ Interesting. I had a chorus guy come out to fix a fault, I said I was getting VDSL installed shortly, he didn't believe me because according to him I was well over 1km from the exchange, so perhaps he had no idea either.

Different chorus guy coming over tomorrow to set it up - going to be very interesting to see what results are.

Success! Turns out I'd use the wrong kind of line to go from the master filter to the modem, so re-wired that using Cat5. That corrected the noise issue. Also found out that exchanges are having software updates applied to boost the range of VDSL out to 1.5km (or maybe it was 1.2), which is why more people are able to get it.

In any case I've gone from

13.1 down / 0.87 up / SNR 5.0dB -6.5

to

24.1 down / 2.5 up / SNR of 9.3

Who installs master filters? I presume that's a chargable job..

I did it myself but have heard that it's part of the install for VDSL. If you are just getting it done "because", then yea I imagine it'd be charged for.

HENCE WHY FOREVER ALONE

I have VDSL without a master filter (that I am aware of) - I just use a standard ADSL splitter. Although I only have a single phone jack in my entire house, and the cabinet is across the road.
Code:
Receive Direction Send Direction Max. DSLAM throughput kbit/s 70000 30000 Attainable throughput kbit/s 94309 29824 Current throughput kbit/s 70000 29771 Signal-to-noise ratio dB 19 12 Line attenuation dB 8 10

So long as you have a passive filter you'd be fine. They are only concerned with low frequencies (<4khz)- it blocks anything but low frequencies from your crusty POTS from entering the phone line on which your modem sits.

If you have VDSL but not a master splitter then you're wasting your time. So much crap can come from internal wiring. Even if you have no phones connected the internal wiring can still screw shit up.

Only exception is if your demark point only has one set of wires that go straight to your VDSL modem and nowhere else.

I have zero use for any wiring or outlets that aren't associated with my modem, so my plan is to disconnect all internal wiring at the physical splitting point of the internal wiring, other than the one going straight to the VDSL related outlet.

Image of existing wiring

That'l hopefully eliminate any internal wiring noise due to so much wiring going to redundant outlets (5 in total), and AFAIK, won't need a master splitter.

It’s a common myth that having a naked xDSL connection (a xDSL connection without a phone) removes the need to use any filters. This is incorrect. While plug in filters are not needed as there is no need to split voice and xDSL signals, a naked xDSL service will still continue to be impacted by premises wiring issues that can only be eliminated by the installation of a master filter or disconnecting all other internal wiring so that only a single jack point remains connected for the xDSL modem.

About 15m from what I can tell. I can choose an outlet that's only a few meters away, but then it becomes a wifi signal issue

yea thanks for that. I'm counting on the "disconnecting all other internal wiring so that only a single jack point remains connected for the xDSL modem." bit.

Its supposed to be Gigabit but I think something in my home network is bottlenecking.

Would track it down but we move into our new place in Jan and that will have Cat6 all the way through so will fix it then.

Yeah, I think our connections are probably meant to be the same speeds. I don't know why I don't get the full gigabit in the speedtest, and I'm supposed to have a 500Mbps upload connection. Never managed to get that much out of a speedtest. I have seen it get as much as about 380Mbps though. The download did get up over 900 in one test.

Got speed bumped to 1000/500 in Octoberish I think.

Then had nearly 3 months without due to moving house.

OK. Not UNimpressed, but not impressed either. Just another ISP, certainly not even remotely as terrible as others have posted (in my experience).

I recommend getting signed up for the network outages notifications, but I'd say the same for any ISP - or have something that'll monitor http://status.trustpower.co.nz

Any reason why? I'm with 2 Degree's (ex-Snap) and I think I'm paying Too Much™ at $95pm on open term unlimited VDSL (no fibre). Looking at alternatives, and am tempted by their free Samsung TV offer.

My aunt and uncle were with them. Slow in the evenings - although YMMV - and their penalties for breaking the 2 year contract (even if you're unhappy with the service) are quite high.

Yep, that's the only reason I can think of to not go with them - the penalties are a little (not a lot) higher than average for early termination of contracts. Frankly the $55/month for one year, $88/month for 2nd year (UFB is due here for then) is definitely a hefty reduction over what TeleSparklecom had offered, so even if the performance is a little lower, it's still a better deal.

Also I'm nobodies idea of a twitch gamer, so latency is only an issue for the most egregious of scenarios. Hell, in my teens and 20's I wasn't a twitch gamer - I'm quite notably worse now (as Rince and Deth can both attest).

As an aside, they were fined last year for not clearly outlining the type of charges crocos refers to here:
