Some good news from National: we can still afford to pay $1billion annually to those who don't need it:

What's that? Dishonest, incongruous politicians? I don't think that has to be a given.

No, the socioeconomic structures of the Western world being unable to afford the lifestyles to which retiring Baby Boomers feel they are entitled.

And retirees can legally vote. A 5-year-old with asthma in some leaky mouldy shithole can't. So guess whose dick gets sucked.

There needs to be an employer and employee incentive to keep working after 65. Unless I had oodles of money in the bank to waste away on cruises or somesuch, health permitting I'd rather remain socially productive and work for as long as possible. To think that once you hit 35 you "only" have 30 more years of income is daunting.

Or you could look at it optimistically and see that you're not even half way into your working life (Assuming you started working around ~15).

Jesus. I really hope the existing plutocratic financial system doesn't last for another 30 years.

I thought the Auckland housing market was retarded two years ago, guess I was wrong eh.

Where is all the credit lines coming from that are enabling people to load up with such ridiculous mortgages?

The inflated house market itself of course.

Buy a house, wait a while, or make some 'improvements', have its market value revalued as being 20% higher than the purchase price. Extend that mortgage and use the money from that as the deposit on the next house.

Rinse and repeat.

Only just catching up on this one, but it's the environmental damage of tractors and diggers that's the problem isn't it?

No, it's the laws protecting NZ heritage from being exported overseas for cheap, being skirted by local exporters (one of whom happens to be married to a current National MP.)

Correct - Forrest & Bird are pissed that what were once wetlands may now be being dug up in order to reclaim the dead carbon sinks.

That, and the general objection to 'raw' resources being exported offshore, instead of value being added here in the form of employed local carvers etc etc.

Swamp kauri correction
Quote:
3:11 PM Monday Jun 29, 2015

On Thursday June 18 a story was published in the Northern Advocate, entitled "Call for Halt on Swamp Kauri Exports".

This story mentioned that Kauri Ruakaka Limited, formerly known as Oravida, has a stockpile of swamp kauri at Ruakaka.

The story referred to Kauri Ruakaka Limited by its former name and described it as a Chinese company, when in fact Kauri Ruakaka Limited is and always has been a New Zealand registered company.

We wish to clarify that the article was not intended to give the impression that Kauri Ruakaka Limited (Oravida), Judith Collins MP and her husband have engaged in any illegal or improper conduct in respect of the collection or export of swamp kauri.

The Northern Advocate apologises if any of our readers formed an inaccurate view of the activities of Kauri Ruakaka Limited as a result of this story.

Paper apologises for stating what is assumed but not proven.

I'm not sure why people would assume the worst of National? Maybe it's the 50% jump in homeless people in the Auckland CBD?
