Yeah but it's not as if the things Banks is alleged to have done were done as a minister or even as an MP. He was a private citizen during the entire time this was going on. So it's not comparable with Winston's corruption during the Labour govt.
|
3rd May 2012, 23:54 | #1207 | |
|
It's not the exact same scenario but I think that it's comparable. Particularly regarding ethical standards ie otoh Peters was within the law also. Or does Key not have the authority to act on Mps private citizen conduct? Or a least get some straight answers so it doesn't look like Banks' refusing to answer etc seem like him lying as an MP.
Again I thing Keith Ng delivers the point well: Quote:

Agreed. But I don't think it's comparable with Winston's corruption. They're not the same.

Dear John Key, cut this fucking shit out.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/poli...er-boat-people NZ's policy on refugees is one of the things that I gloatingly lord over Australians. This is not a thing you want to change to be more like Australia. |

So I just corrected a couple of people who didn't understand how a progressive income tax works and were labouring under the classic "if you get a payrise from $48,000 to $48,001 your net income goes down" misconception
Which would be unremarkable except for the fact that both of them are extremely intelligent, educated people who are quite active in politics and at least one of them admitted the misunderstanding was a factor in her decision to leave the country forever a couple years ago That scares the shit out of me |

Mind-numbingly dumb student allowance reforms
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/ar...ectid=10803426
If they want to save money, instead of hard cap on student allowances based on number of years, why not (for example) deny it to people with low GPA? Denying allowances to good students wanting to do post-graduate studies, the very people you want to encourage to stay, just seems mind-numbingly dumb. |
4th May 2012, 15:22 | #1216 |
|
Agreed, I agree with limiting access to it somehow. Not sure a 4 year hard cap is the right way to do it.
What happens if you're doing a 4 year degree and fail one paper and have to repeat it pushing it out to a 5 year degree? Maybe 4 years for all, Additional available to those on long degrees leading to professions we require (Doctors etc) or those with good GPAs that want to do post-grad study. Though I guess a 4 year cap encourages you not to stuff round.

Perhaps education needs to be cheaper?
I quite like what I am seeing with things like iTunes U, and it strikes me that for very many types of courses that those that innately have the right skills to succeed at higher learning really don't need to turn up at an institution very often. There are courses where experience and specialist practical content are an overwhelming component of the course but these are not the norm. Perhaps a change is needed that in situations where pure knowledge transfer is occurring that this be done at home through canned Internet delivered material that can be reused over several or even many years? Universities then need far fewer staff, far less land, far simpler buildings, and so on. Students could also fit their studies around work commitments. It could be that NZ needs far fewer universities - after all calculus is the same world over and perhaps other institutions are better at presenting the material and delivering it at low cost. This is in fact the way the world is already heading and so it's going to get scary out there for many institutions that currently rely upon being the only choice a student can make. This in turn will generate a lot of noise from unions - all of these folk who really do little work for a living already are hardly likely to willingly accept that they're not needed for anything anymore and thus will no longer be paid. Shearer: "I’ve asked for the Auditor-General to look into all the departmental as well as ministerial processes involved in this case." Oh great, the A-G gets to look at the processes by which the citizenship was granted, not the decision to grant the citizenship itself. Is bribery part of a departmental or ministerial process? Nope, well we won't investigate that then. (see: "Philip Field") |

Because... why? Banks wasn't an MP. It happened before he was in parliament. If he got stood down, Labour is going to start finding MPs who got speeding tickets before they were MPs and demand they be stood down.
What is it that Banks has actually done wrong? Declared donations under $25,000 as anonymous because they... they were under $25,000 and you are allowed to declare them as anonymous?
