Government asks Queen to suspend Parliament

Quote:
The government has asked the Queen to suspend Parliament just days after MPs return to work in September - and only a few weeks before the Brexit deadline.

Boris Johnson said a Queen's Speech would take place after the suspension, on 14 October, to outline his "very exciting agenda".

But it means MPs are unlikely to have time to pass laws to stop a no-deal Brexit on 31 October.

The only people who think that’s a big deal are people who don’t know how Parliament works. And those who are trying to inflame those who don’t.

But. Holy shit the UK is leaving the EU in 4 weeks. Still trying to get my head around it.

With nothing resolved, no plan in place. The show is just beginning.

So how's all this playing out? Court action likely to fail? Brexit, deep UK depression. Domino into Europe. Russia takes East Ukraine. Informal US/AU alliance as they back away from EU. NZ shifts towards the China dominated Pacific, the region being the linchpin in the power balance between US & China. Biblical levels of suffering in Yemen (still.) Ultimately unpredictable weather events prompting unprecedented population shifts across the globe that make the whole nation-state paradigm untenable.

Maybe?

I think you’re on the money. I’d add more maneuvering by Putin to restore the Russian Empire.

Supreme Court: Suspending Parliament was unlawful, judges rule

Doesn't seem clear this will achieve much.

Boris is as cunning as he is slimy. Trying to abdicate responsibility to the EU by sending the formal letter unsigned and his own saying it would be bad for everyone if they acquiesced (to the UK's request to postpone a hard exit.)

I really liked the idea of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland forming a union, remaining inside the EU.

It'll solve all those border problems. And would give England the isolation it craves. Wales of course will just keep being Wales.

Scotland 'cannot be imprisoned' in UK

Quote:
Scotland "cannot be imprisoned in the union against its will" by the UK government, Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon says.

Ms Sturgeon said the SNP's success in the general election gave her a mandate to hold a new referendum on independence.

However, UK ministers are opposed to such a move with Michael Gove saying the vote in 2014 should be "respected".

Ms Sturgeon told the BBC that if the UK was to continue as a union, "it can only be by consent".

That is pretty fascinating.

Ah, but think of that opportunity cost! If that money wasn't saved the UK would have missed out on... I dunno, whatever it is that's more important than the wellbeing of kids.

Orkney Islands consider leaving the UK and (returning to) being a territory of Norway:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...ive-governance

Presumably this would bring EU membership; I bet Scotland is looking on with interest.
