Caff, how did you get the rayed-looking lights? I try that and tend to get blurry blobs

Completely by accident

I read somewhere (after taking that shot) that it's a result of using large apertures on a lens that has a small-ish number of aperture elements. In other words, instead of the aperture being a circle, it's decagonal, or dodecagonal or something (the reverse is that the smaller the aperture, the more like a circle it will be)... so it creates the 'ray' effect on point light sources through diffraction. Some people look at it as a negative thing... I quite like it.

So I guess... try using larger apertures?

Buy a starlight filter, quite gimmicky but could have some use. The star comes from eight blade diaphragm in your lens (which doubles to 16-point star) when you shoot below f/16. Nikon lenses have nine blades, hence the 18-point stars from Nikon's glass.

What I'm interested in is how yours is so much clearer with far better light handling. My setup for this shot was:
- Tripod
- ISO100, F/10, 20 sec
- Canon 350D
- Sigma 17-70mm DC lens
- Small amount of contrast, saturation increase in Lightroom.

I'd be keen to hear how you managed a much sharper image. The water looks more still, which could be one thing; the reflections are way better. But what camera/glass are you using, and any advice on settings/processing?
Cheers,

I no longer have my Exif info for that shot, I took it a while ago now
It would have been shot with a Canon 10D and a Canon 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5 I would have done a bit of PP in photoshop which would have consisted of running an S curve through and an increase in Saturation.

Now days with my photos I tend to Desaturate rather than saturate as this is the effect I like.

Do you guys have an online presence for your photos? I keep mine up on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/vertphoto/

Yep, think it is about 8500 x 950 or something as that is just a crop. It's pretty blurry though as my trying to be a tripod in gale force wind skills weren't very good, but you are more than welcome to have it and play with it.

Nice.

That link crashes firefox 3 and Safari (on XP) for me. Works fine with javascript turned off though. Anyone else get that?

Cheers. It was just ambient light on an overcast day at botanical gardens in Wellington. There is a fairly minimal increase in fill light, contrast and saturation in Lightroom.

I also took one with flash - but that image somehow loses a lot of the feel, with either the background becoming too dark or the fern blowing out depending on what I did in LR.
