i'm up on the apex of a warehouse roof under a threatening black sky with a hole in the clouds shining light onto the screen of a netbook that i've plugged into the console port of an outdoor wap. it's windy, cold, my shoes only have just enough grip on the iron and i'm already pissed at having to be up there fixing the wap in the first place.

windows 7 doesnt have hyperterm, but that's ok cause i'd downloaded a copy onto the desktop. except between that and a usb serial port the data doesn't show on the console straight away and hyperterm is just being a dick.

thoughts of having to send the wap back to the supplier or take it down and break into its seal for the slight chance there might be an internal reset button are suddenly put to rest by www.portableapps.com and putty on my key ring usb stick.

i'd just managed to break the boot process to put the wap into a recovery mode - mission accomplished as the rest can be done indoors - and it starts raining.

TestDisk & PhotoRec (2 apps, one package). TestDisk can recover lost partitions, while PhotoRec can recover files from drives when the partition data has been lost.

Saves shit when a lot of other things cant, and open source.

Dunno if it makes any difference to you Monza but Windows 7 at least has a tool to do that built in, called (funnily enough) Snipping Tool.

GODDAMN!!! I knew there had to be a better way to search in Windows 7.

Useful for the chronically ignorant that's wondering where the "advanced search" section wandered off to:

Yeah, I know there's third-party tools, but learning the Advanced Query Syntax means I can rock up to any PC and search it. I don't need to install anything, no need to faff about with USB flash drives etc.

actually I looked at ifttt and thought it was an awesome idea but I'm just not willing to hand over so many passwords (especially not my email account as that I keep completely separate from all other websites).

and to be honest I didn't put in my "usual" FTP username and password for that ftp test website (but *almost* did before thinking "..nah").

I found it because I am having issues getting secure FTP working with my synology NAS (no idea why yet) and wanted a quick diagnostic.

Heresy
yawn.

These are my must-haves

TCC/LE - cmd.exe replacement. A godsend, if only for allowing ctrl-v/ctrl-c copy/pasting, and also shift-insert pasting. I used to use Console2 on top of it, which allows for multible tabbed command prompts, but that doesn't work within Win7 x64. TCC/LE has a lot more functionality but I like it for the ease of pasting.

AutoHotkey. I don't do anything fancy with it, but use windowskey + a to either start a TCC/LE window, or bring the out-of-focus TCC/LE window to the front. Also use things to type in oft-repeated strings, eg windows key + 3 to send my TACACS user/password and press enter, to log into network kit.

NotePad++ - huge improvement on Notepad.exe

Oh yeah and Putty Connection Manager, because I can't be arsed remembering the 200+ mgmt IPs for our estate.

comprehensive tcpip reset:
ttcshelbyville.wordpress.com/2011/10/20/reset-tcpip-network-troubleshooting/
Quote:
Click Start Menu, type cmd in the search box or run box ( Hold down Ctrl + Shift and hit Enter)Type the following commands, each followed by pressing enter.

ipconfig /flushdns
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
netsh int reset all
netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh winsock reset catalog

This will rebuild the tcp/ip protocol stack (fully)

After rebooting, run a command prompt as an administrator and type:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Reboot

Anyone into newsgroup downloading?

I discovered sick-beard today, a nifty set of python scripts that automatically downloads new tv eps for you, integrates with sabnzbd, newzbin, etc. Just beats the built in sabnzbd scripting by miles.

*forgot to mention, altho its a set of python scripts, it provides a really nice web interface to manage it all.

I like to keep a simple dynamic desktop on my work PC that tells me the time and date at a glance. Rainmeter can do a whole bunch of stuff that can just about replace your desktop / taskbar and turn it into a writhing mess of CPU meters, RSS rolls and weather reports... if you're into that. Me, I just dont like the Taskbar clock and wanted something I can quickly glance at with [Windows Key] + [Spacebar].

Lots of customization to be had. I edited these skins so they centre to the screen whatever the resolution. Skins can be Always ontop, with transparency options, click through-able and such.
