Had a family outing to MOTAT today since it's free for Waitakere residents this month. Christ, that place is still boring as fuck.

I can see the legal age being raised again, course it doesn't bother me that much cos I'm old but still... |

I'd expect to see research that shows that raising the age limit would improve those statistics if they did change the law. Because I could get alcohol and weed from age 15 without any problems, and I'm pretty sure that scenario was not unique to me.

The problem seems to be like, the only solution that ever seems to be applied are arbitrary law changes.
I mean there's totally a binge drinking culture in NZ, and yes some kids will tragically drink themselves to death. But how does raising the drinking age change any of that? People aren't drinking themselves to death in bars, and there will be ways for youngsters to get alcohol otherwise. I mean the kid in the story took a bottle of vodka, he didn't buy it. And even then we shouldn't be reacting to single events that make the news. If you don't want kids binge drinking you have to change the culture, but good luck with that. What about letting 16 year olds buy 4% beer? It's pretty tough to not puke before you drink yourself to death on beer i'd figure. Better beer than vodka. But i'm not a government think tank, surely they can come up with some actual solutions. |

The kid was from what seemed to be a wealthy white family from what I could tell. It was like a "if it could happen to rich whitey, it could happen to anyone!" bit. I liked how on Campbell Live they repeated the message "what every parent and teenager must see!", which seems like they're talking about the bit on the teen drinking, but what they really meant was the upcoming advertising.
Part of the issue is the assumption that teens drink it up to party and be cool. I'm pretty sure however a lot of kids are using it in the same way as adults do - to dull the pain of life. Get enough people doing that and you start a culture where more functional teens are drinking to be cool.

The kid that died was 17 though, not even legal drinking age... I don't see what raising the age limit is going to do. It's about education, like JP said changing the culture.

Just man up and be prepared to suffer a few casualties if you're prepared to sell booze in stores on the streets.
Jesus fucking Christ already. It's only a muppet or two a year. If Kermit karks it, sure people are a bit down but the only one who masturbates to wash away the pain is Miss Piggy. Last edited by [WanG] Wandarah : 12th May 2010 at 09:17. |

the tech forum should have a random question(s)/thoughts thread imo ;p
anyways~ excuse my ignorance, but what's the deal with audio on dual display? i was given a 32" inch sony bravia lcd tv yesterday and i have no real use for it so i've got it hooked up to my pc via HDMI(card has two inputs) on a 6m cable so it's WAY across the other side of the room and atm the audio is coming from my comps speakers. do i need a soundcard with dual inputs or something? i'm confused :/ fanx. edit: i want the sound coming out of the tv, if that isn't obvious! Hi Warrick,
Thanks for your letter. I see you are in quite the predicament there! Don't worry, you're not alone and we have all been there before. Fortunately there is a quick fix! You just need to take a trip to your local dick smith and make the following purchase: http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/en/product/C1240 Additionally, if you need to span a distance of more than 2m, you will need to buy a product like this: http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/en/product/C1165 With this you will be able to enjoy your downloaded linux isos in full high definition, with audio! Many thanks The Computer Janitor
