What's the bet this will get perfected, be freaking awesome and then the whole world decides to give a damn and majorly drops industrial production so they never get built.

Anyone else waiting for their dev kit? I'm salivating.
I reckon I can write a driver so that it looks your you're sitting in front of a screen of any size you choose. That way it will work with all games without the need for adaptation. Course won't be 3D, but nice stepping stone. Hopefully me and other dev's will figure out how to adapt it to existing games pretty quick - especially ones that already use unreal engine since there's dev tools being worked on for that etc. Also be interested in seeing if I can sync it's spacial positioning with a Leap Motion (when their out) so you can see your hands in VR as the players hands, and interact with the world with them. oculus rift seems pretty cool. i hope they don't fuck it up for the final product some how.
since it's not being developed by apple, i don't have high hopes for that.

So I'm guessing the way that most people are going to be able to access this will be via console?
Requirement for 60fps with vsync will definitely call for some grunty PC's |

Yeah its pretty intelligent.
We see way less at the edges of our vision anyway. Important thing is detecting motion. The fact that your not going to need any kind of special connectors or dual video outs is a major in getting it out IMO. Just std video + usb for telemetry. |

There are so many kinds of games this could be good for. I reckon an RTS would be awesome, flying over the battlefield and all that. I imagine there are probably a few new genres of game that will emerge too. One of the main challenges I think will be input. I'm pretty sure gesturing tech will take off with this, cause obviously you're not going to be able to see any input device. I wonder if the consumer version will have a camera or two on the front, just so you can see what's going on outside without taking off the gear.

Anyone see the video interview they did with The Verge? They were making some pretty big claims for the consumer version...such as positional tracking/the ability to peer around objects in 3d space.

There's also the controller side of things. The Razer Hydra is a good first step in that direction, they just need to make it wireless and improve the accuracy. Personally this reminds me of the days of 3Dfx when they came on the scene. I haven't been this excited about new tech in a long time so can't wait to try this out. |
