Yeah, lovely shot. I can't find the metadata on flickr for that photo.
Do you mind sharing what you had your camera set to?

That last Oscar photo. I find the most difficult thing right now with shooting at night is keep colors consistent. Do you do a lot of post processing with the RAW file?

Yea I do a fair bit of processing.

For that pic, it was 1/4 sec exposure, f/4.5, ISO 200 @ 18mm with a SB600 strobe on 1/8 power (I think), bare with a CTO gel, about 3 meters away from the model.

I had white balance set to cool white fluro (about as cool as my white balance goes) at time of shooting, to get the most red I could naturally get out of the sunset, the flames, and the CTO gel on the strobe.

Globally it's normally just a colour temperature shift and a very subtle S curve on the exposure. Sometimes I'll further deepen the blacks, depending on how much it affects the rest of it. (I did it for the steampunk ones, but not the flame ones)
I'm also using the Clarity slider in Lightroom 4 a fair bit now, rather than using high pass layers in Photoshop. The whole "halo" effect has been greatly reduced in LR4, so I love using it

Locally, I dodged shadows and mid tones on the model himself to help him separate a little from the background. I extended the background out to the right using the content aware rescale tool in Photoshop. I dodged the highlights in the whites of the eyes too, just ever so slightly to bring them out a little. It's easy to go overboard and leave them looking like laserbeams.

LR4? I thought 3.6 was the latest. Or are you in on some kind of Beta program?

EDIT: Answered my own Q: Yes, in beta.

Damn, bummer to hear that Havs.

My latest that I've actually found time to process:

Drip drop. by Rick0r McZany, on Flickr

Toying around with drops for the first time in a good wee while. Still not there yet. Slightly missed focus with this one.

Getting a fair few collisions (10-15% of the ~300 shots I took) but they were far too close to the water.

Drop size is still too big I think.

Aquarium airline tubes with airline valves to vary the rate of drop, in a mariotte syphon system I crafted myself out of a coke bottle so the rate doesn't change as the bottle empties.

I'll take a set up pic next time.

Top pic, that thing she is holding is distracting.

2nd pic the pose looks uncomfortable

3rd pic, dunno, can't place it, converging lines away from the model? no obvious focal point? Mind you the staircase on RHS is distracting.

I've never wanted to do wedding photography, so consequently have never shot a wedding. I've, of late, lost my inspiration for picking up a camera. We got a call to shoot a wedding, Suz said yes. So we did it.

I took this shot as the bride was walking from inside out to her guests who were in bright sunlight. Metered for her, which blew the background out. Going through the photos, I looked at this and I felt like I'd actually captured something. We went and had a viewing with the bride and groom, and when this image came up, I could see his eyes start to glass up, and since then I've wanted to pick the camera back up. Weird how the thing you never thought you'd enjoy, turns out to be the thing that makes a difference.

So I took a little trip inside the Arctic Circle last week near the top of Finland and took some snaps. 5D MkII, 24-70mm, ISO mostly 100, 20-30 sec exposures. When it got really, really good I never took a photo cos you tend to just stand there in awe.

Hah, yeah the trip turned out well! I organised the whole thing, spent around 3 months researching it and booked late December. Stayed in Saariselkä which is about 30km from Ivalo Airport and around 250km above the Arctic Circle in Northern Finland. I didn't want to follow the aurora tourist trail and do the Abisko / Ice Hotel thing in Sweden nor go to Tromso in Norway and Iceland wasn't far enough north to satisfy me, though the Aurora is quite fantastic there if you catch it. I was looking for a log cabin somewhere isolated in the Lapland and after checking out lots of log cabins in Norway and Sweden I decided on Finland and eventually landed in Saariselka.

Flights were 185 return from London to Ivalo via Helsinki. The cabin was split between 6 of us (had 8 beds though) and cost 213 each for 7 nights. Had two lounges, sauna, fireplace, central heating, good sized kitchen, the works. Saariselkä has a lot of log cabins and they are all around 50m+ apart and are so quiet all you can hear is your own heart beat. Our place was on the edge of "town" so remote enough but still close enough we could sled into the "supermarket" which is big enough to satisfy.

Husky Sledding, Snowmoiling, Ice Karting were amazing, as was the 1200m toboganning run. We all travelled by sled which was awesome fun. Ice Fishing sucked, was almost a joke.

Funny thing was the Aurora KP was measuring a moderate, but more than satisfactory 3-4 when the sky was clear (first 5 nights) and when it hit jackpot with that huge solar flare it went to a 10 year high of 7 but had clouded over. Ahhhh well, we saw them 4 out of the 5 nights it was clear and were more than happy. I've had mates go up and not see anything for 4 days. I've also heard of people going up for 7 days and not seeing anything. We were just lucky.

There are some crazy cottages throughout the Lapland, we were seriously considering this cabin for a while...

But it was a 15hr flight to the northern tip of Finland then a 200km (via 250 euro taxi) drive to a remote cabin near the Russian border - 40km from the nearest shop. We decided against it because we'd be travelling for 19hours each way.

Saariselka was fucking great fun, would definitely do it again.

He's an awesome dude. I could barely keep up with his routine fire performance (fast martial arts based forms + slow shutter), so I asked him to stick around and get a few still/staged shots. There's more of him on my Flickr, but hopefully I'll get to shoot him again soon.

Some friends and I did some night-time photography practice photographing cars on Thurs and Friday. I'm quite happy with these photos since usually I just do motorsports coverage for my site and anytime I try and do anything 'artistic' it just comes out horribly tragic.
