You left out The Wire which is unforgivable.

HBO also gave us the great series of Watchmen, Succession, The Outsider, Euphoria, the first four seasons of Game of Thrones, Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Barry, True Detective (S1), Band of Brothers, Westworld (S1), John Oliver. Take away all the networks and just leave me HBO and I'll be happy. I love the old school logo introduction. The TV turns on in-screen, then comes the static, then HBO Entertainment fades in. As soon as I hear that sound, the couch becomes more comfortable, the room is warmer.

The HBO that made all those amazing shows no longer exists. HBO is now a business unit of Warnermedia, just like Lucasfilm is now just a business unit of Disney.

OK so I finally succumbed to Netflix's constant recommendation that I watch BR2049, and I am happily relieved that it did not ruin Blade Runner for me. Huge Villeneuve fanboy here and having Hampton Fancher on screenplay duties was reassuring. I thought the movie was very well made with enough echoes of the original's magic to keep me engaged.

On a purely nerd level, HOLY SHIT Sean Young's Rachael was incredible.I had to go and find out what was involved after seeing the movie, and apparently it was a combo of Sean Young on set coaching a body double on how to mimic her walk and body language; closeup facefootage of Young and the double; a CG team going bonkers on CG face work (apparently their directive was "don't suck like Rogue One"); and an entirely different voice actress who could mimic 20-year-old Sean Young's voice. Shit's getting nuts.

I thought it was a new(ish) thing when Weyland mentioned an old friend in Prometheus, but apparently it goes back to Ridley reusing CGI from the Alien Nostromo disengaging sequence in the Spinner docking graphics. Then Captain Dallas is listed on the green screen in Aliens as coming from Tyrell Corp. during Ripley's debrief.

Anyway - with Ridley involved, it comes full circle.

The Batman - teaser

I'm not sure how many times I can see Batman re-imagined, but I'll pretty much watch anything with Robert Pattinson these days.

The track they chose for the teaser doesn't hurt either.

John Boyega is pretty much not recommending the Disney Star Wars movies

And I absolutely agree with him. He was the most interesting character in the first sequel. Rey, Kylo, and Poe were all just palette swaps for the Luke, Vader, Han. A rogue Stormtrooper? That's got incredible potential.
Finn and Phasma were two characters that I thought were absolutely mistreated by the franchise.

Boyega's character Finn was set up to be something amazing, especially with the pre-release coverage that ended up being mostly plot misdirection, and his entire character was essentially dismissed in the next two movies.

Quote:
“You get yourself involved in projects and you’re not necessarily going to like everything. [But] what I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.”

I think the trailer is cut in a very uninspired way and I think the music was the wrong choice. Hard to believe that Denis Villeneuve would greenlight that - the execution could have been so much better. But I'm still optimistic that the movie itself will be good.

Underwhelming production design. Pretty flat looking. Seems like VFX isn't finished in a lot of shots. Also no real justice to the epic scale of the story as the trailer is mostly medium shots. Trailer cut must have gone through studio only because it's extremely formulaic to a typical blockbuster - probably to entice audiences who don't know the source material or the director i.e "BIG ACTOR", THEIR FACE, "BIG ACTOR," THEIR FACE, "BIG ACTOR," THEIR FACE.

Yeah really enjoyed reading how Frank was super impressed with the ideas David Lynch had around costumes being based around renaissance Italian court..

Frank wasn't so complimentary on the choice to make Paul a demi god.

Yep the "here's a star, here's another star, and here's another star" was pretty clear.

Plus "its dune so gotta have a sandworm in the trailer just so everyone knows that dune features sandworms" was kinda on the nose.

trailers are bad.

The trailer was probably created by an external agency without DV's involvement.

Looks cool. Love me some Reynolds.

I don't think the whole holding back blockbusters is going to work out well.

The Lighthouse is very much a "wtf did I just watch" movie. Dafoe and Pattinson are fantastic.

Not sure if I'll read up on it or choose to remain forever puzzled.

Watching a few double features. Kurt moustache bone tomahawk/hateful 8. Arrival/BR 2049 and good time/uncut gems. Finally watched Man of Steel, which I enjoyed - chiselchin was a good fit. Might tee it up with Midnight Special.
