Any team with Ma'a Nonu in the midfield is not "ominous". Unless in the sense of "ominous signs of self-destructing".

Those links show that Nonu is the back who generally makes the most rucks and is making a lot of tackles.
Maybe his role is not to carry the ball, but to behave like a forward. Could be a ploy to stop conceding turnovers when the backs break/get isolated from the forwards. Maybe in game you can't see him, but your stats certainly don't show that he is this invisible player you keep harping on about. He isn't running the ball like he used to, but maybe he isn't supposed to.

Those stats seem pretty heavily weighted to the front row, where is the stat for catches/drops under the high ball for example?

You think there should be a special stats category of not dropping the ball?

Ok for the sakes of argument we somehow all agree Nonu is rubbish and should be dropped. Now who do we replace him with? Within the squad there is Ellison and Ben Smith and Kahui would be also there if he wasn't injured. I don't think any of those guys are any better than Nonu. Kahui would be closest but he's more of a centre. I 'm not talking to anyone that thinks Conrad Smith should be moved or dropped.
Let's widen the net, would you take any of the Aussie or Sprinbok 2/5s over Nonu? Ashley-Cooper maybe but he plays all over the backline Noone remembers what his best spot is anymore. I wouldn't trade Nonu for any of the Argies or Springboks centres-2/5. Anyone got someone I'm missing? |

Who's talking about Nonu being dropped? I'm just saying that adding Nonu to a team doesn't make it "ominous". It seems to me that the teams he's been most recently associated with have been:
The Canes, for whom Nonu was a disruptive negative influence and who have improved out of sight since he was kicked to the kerb The Blues, for whom Nonu was fucking useless The ABs, for whom Nonu has been mostly invisible qed. |
