This is no issue for me. Also; no business in their right mind will deploy iphones/pads across their workforce for it's smart features. (Sure as an iWank for sales people and execs they might) Android is no problem. This also goes for factory floor, in-vehicle, ruggardised in machinery (loaders/forklifts etc) (I know this because I implement it on a regular basis) What I also know is that three times Apple has broken the way users use our software with their software updates. Not through bugs, but through improper backward compatibility and undocumented changes. |

Both count as smart phone development. Javascript can be given direct access to native API in both OS's. Mozilla's upcoming OS is Javascript native. This is the way of the future. Last edited by _indigo1 : 27th January 2013 at 21:07. |

I can appreciate life would be tough when playing outside of the expected design pattern too. Lots of things risk being changed and there will be no testing or sympathy from a company like Apple. |

Look at how the web browser has developed. Companies always try to work toward a platform that gives them control and power. It's what companies do. History has also proven that 'the people' have a choice in this, and can ultimately break out of this model, the controlling platform forced to change. (Talking IE v FF here - the net would be very different had that war not occured) With regard to the second sentence; I don't see why it's apples job to test someone else's app; unless I'm misunderstanding you. Developer of the app is responsible for this. This includes detection of execution environment capabilities and adaption as necessary. There are and will be more libraries that do this for you. If a vendor decides to provide additional API functionality; GREAT, use it if it's there. Their API should be what they have tested. The reason we are not all using CompuServ type systems is that this style of development DOES work. It's what the entire internet is based on. Regardless of whether native is better; in the end, ubiquity is king. It's the reason most of the computing world is still running inferior turbocharged x86 variants instead of a newer much more efficient architecture. As HTML5 gears up and begins to show it can do all the things a native app can do, the question developers will ask is 'WHY doesnt it work on platform x, it works on all others' Leading platform x to join the club or be left behind. This has already happened to a certain extent. With exception to MS, the mobile world has upgraded it's browsing experience with modern HTML5 functionality available on most platforms. Take a look 5 years ago. If you even tried to run an ACID test on a mobile browser you'd be laughed out of your dev office. It's happening to Flash, because it's too hard to support all platforms and the community demands a better solution. Last edited by _indigo1 : 28th January 2013 at 13:55. |

Oh, in case it wasn't clear: It's entirely possible for a web app (using that term losely; as an HTML5 environment doesn't require being online) to use native environment widgets rather than using HTML.

But your ridiculous comment aside; all of your examples would seem to me to be rudimentary uses of smart devices - uses which most any half decent half modern one should be able to perform. Knowing that, the only thing open to variability is organisational or personal brand alignment. Take another read of the thread history and see if you can spy some context to the discussion. And on a more personal note; the only one of the three I count as real work is Accounting anyway. The others are parasitical. |

58m facebook-on-android users versus 54m facebook-on-iOS users sounds cool, but then you're faced with the facts that its basically the entire iOS user base, but only a fraction of the Android user base. Does the comparison really mean anything? They're cool stats for Facebook marketing execs, but Android and iOS marketing execs couldn't care less.
