Some evacuees, particularly in Texas, on the far fringes of the storm's path, suggested authorities overreacted in demanding they leave their homes.

"Next time, it's going to be bad because people who evacuated like us aren't going to evacuate," said Catherine Jones, 53, of Silsbee, Texas, who spent three days on a cot at a church shelter with her disabled son. "They jumped the gun."
And if they hadn't evacuated and Gustav had hit as a full Force 5 they'd be complaining that they should have been evacuated.

Ah, humanity, so amusing

They may have photoshopped the ring onto some stock 80's photography.
Then again, the "80's" is meant to be in again.

It wasn't cool the first time and it's just laughable now

On that note, I tried making a sugar crystal last weekend, something I havent done since primary school.

Failed miserably.. and i'm not sure why. Super saturated near boiling water with sugar (dissolved until no more could dissolve), tie a string to a pencil, balance on top of the jar of water, let it dangle in the water, and wait.

Don't have time now to google, but what about that case of the mother in the US who killed her 5 kids? Her husband worked for NASA, they were Christians, she home-schooled all 5, and then iirc she heard voices telling her to kill her kids. I'm sure she was jailed, and then released? Can't remember. But in that scenario she sure sounded genuinely mentally ill (psychosis).

I thought the charge of infanticide was only used if it was a case of post-partum depression?

IIRC aren't you supposed to soak the string in the solution and then have it dangle *out* of said solution so the water can evaporate? IE: if any of the string is still in the solution you'll just get a wick effect.
Then you're meant to dip the string in the solution to soak it once a day or something.

Meh...IR old. High School science was 20 years ago and my memory ain't what it used to be (much like the old grey mare)

Bear chases off marijuana farmers in Garfield County
September 3rd, 2008 @ 4:26pm

(KSL News) Another marijuana bust in Garfield County, but this time deputies got a little help from a bear.

Yesterday the Garfield County Sheriff's Office and and the U.S. Forest Service discovered another marijuana grow; this one on the east side of Durfey Creek on Boulder Mountain.

Deputies found the typical plants, pipes and food, but what wasn't typical were the teeth and claw marks. The pipes were chewed in half, food containers were ripped apart and strewn all over and bear prints were visible throughout the camp.

"This bear is definitely law-enforcement minded," said Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins. "If I can find this bear I'm going to deputize him."

Sheriff Perkins said it appears whoever was running this operation decided to abandon their efforts after repeated visits by the black bear.

"This particular bear apparently was not going to give up and basically chased these marijuana farmers away," said Sheriff Perkins. "Our county is so tough on drugs that even the wildlife is getting in on the action."

Sheriff Perkins said the grow included 4,000 "starter" sacks of marijuana, which are small plastic bags with seeds, some chemical plant food and dirt and 888 young plants.

They were all destroyed.

crikey!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/sep/05/1

It was the first time in years that John Renehan had tuned into weekday daytime TV when a change to night shifts gave him time to wind down before he went to bed.

To the Manchester engineer's astonishment as he was about to switch off a morning programme about missing people, he caught a glimpse of a man he knew better than any other: his father, who had supposedly been cremated five years before.

"I knew straight away it was him," the 42-year-old father of two said yesterday, after another gentle session with his dad, John Delaney, 71, who has lived as David Harrison at a care home in nearby Oldham for the past eight years. "I was in shock. I couldn't get to sleep for the rest of the day. I was stomping up and down. I've always tried to be strong-minded, but to see my dad, that we thought we had cremated ..."
