There must be gun nuts who hang out in that shop just WAITING for something like this to happen.

Wow.. I also used to work just around the corner from there, on Walls Rd. And I lived only 200m up the road.

Sure makes Auckland sound bad... I mean... how the hell can you be SHOT if you walk into a shop (admittedly carrying a machete is a bad idea in a gun shop, but still.. trigger-happy anyone?)

if i owned the gun shop (or was a patron at the time) and scum came in with a machette provided he was threatening ide give him a blat, he was probably hopped up on P anyhow.

A friends father owns that place. He's a hardcase guy, I can just imagine the scene that went on in there.

I bet the guy who shot him ends up in jail longer than the machete wielding robber.

I'll be upset if the person who shot him gets any jail time. Unless of course he just blasted the guy with a machette for no reason :/

I dunno why, but can't get the image of someone walking in to the shop and enacting out the scene from Pulp Fiction with the machete out the back room.

One of the customers says, "step aside Butch" and blam.

Butch's girlfriend in her beautiful purry voice: "It would be reasonable to question why he went in to the shop with a machete".

Thats just up the road from work.

Really got to wonder why you would take a machete into a gun shop.
I guess he's got some sort of mental problem.

He was in there to rob the place for a gun
If he had a gun, he wouldnt need to rob it would he...
So he had to rob it with something, and lord knows the next best thing to a gun is a big fuck off knife for your average Joe...
If he used his fists he wouldnt have a show in hell, but at least he wouldnt have been shot...
Tough choice....

Looks like it was the son that fired the shot - maybe a degree closer to you than you first thought?

Well, if the owner of the store was security conscious then the whole thing should be on video. I do question anyone in the store ligitimately having a loaded gun on them but it probably doesn't take long to load a gun these days.

Should of shot him in the head, going by the news coverage he looked like a real up-standing citizen.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if the guy who defended himself was charged with attempted murder

edit: TD beat me to it.

IANAL, but I do thinks the only place you can have a hand gun is at a gun shop or in a gun club. And a loaded one? Only in a gun club. Any firearms licence holders want to confirm that for me?

And if you are saying that it is ok for a gun shop owner to have a gun under the till... um no. It maybe in a gun shop but it still has to be under lock and key. At least I hope so.

Edit: To make my point clear, this is not the States, if your shop is robbed, even if it is a gun shop, call the Police. A gun shop worker/owner/passer-by has no more right to shoot any one, or even wave a gun/bat/big fuck off knife around, than any other person.

you can keep hand guns at home

I think the biggest problem would be why there was a loaded gun in the shop.

When I was thinking about getting my pistol liecence I think you had to leave it at a club for the first 6 months kind of like a probation period. As far as a loaded weapon goes thats a big no no but it doesn't that long to load a revolver (with a speedloader) or a semi because you aren't supposed to store the ammo together with the weapon IIRC but if you pick up your pistol from postion A and collect your ammo from position B put them both togther and bang no more threat.

If he comes in and robs you for a gun, what do u think hes going to do once he has a gun? Put two and two together mate, hes not exactly going to go hunt for his dinner now is he.

It's kinda hard to call the police if you have been given a whack with a machette.
It's pretty fucking simple, it's self defense.
