You are joking - right. You can clearly see where they have unhitched the rigs and parked them up next to the trailers...

Well, I guess he got that reaction because it was such a nasty thing to say to someone who has just got engaged and is happy

Kiwi's have a habit of putting people down as a matter of course and it pisses me off.

No idea what you're talking about - I can only see 1, maybe 2 other trucks in the picture aside the train.

Ps. Photo was meant to be in pic of the day thread - oops.

No I'm not, because it is one truck. It's for a world record attempt.

World's longest road trains

In the early 1990s, a few transport operators at Bourke, New South Wales got 30 trailers together for something to do on a quiet weekend. That was the first record to be set. It was towed by a Mack SuperLiner.

In 1999 the town of Merredin, Western Australia officially made it into the Guinness Book of Records, when Marleys Transport made a successful attempt on the record for the world's longest road train. The record was created when 45 trailers, driven by Greg Marley, weighing 603 t (1,330,000 lb) and measuring 610 m (2,000 ft) were pulled by a Kenworth 8x10 K100G for 8 km.

On October 19, 2000, Doug Gould set the first of his records[10] at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, when a roadtrain made up of 79 trailers, measuring 1,018.2 m (3,341 ft) and weighing 1,072.3 t (2,364,000 lb), was pulled by a Kenworth C501T driven by Steven Matthews a distance of 8 km.

On March 29, 2003, the record was surpassed near Mungindi, New South Wales, by a road train consisting of 87 trailers and a single prime mover (measuring 1,235.3 m (4,053 ft) in length).

The record returned to Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, on October 17, 2004, when Doug Gould assembled 100 trailers for a total length of 1,442 m (4,731 ft). The record nearly didn't fall, as the first prime mover's main driveshaft broke when taking off. A second truck was quickly made available, and pulled the train a distance of 1 mi (1,600 m).

In 2006, a truck with 112 semi-trailers (at a length of 1,479.3 m (4,853 ft)) claimed a new record at Clifton, Queensland, pulled by a tri-drive Mack Titan.
Here are some others:

Yeah - Ok. I always thought of a road train as a functional unit - my sister's boyfriend drove them across Oz. The normal sized ones that can go for hundreds on kms and have immunity from running over Aborigines that sleep on the warm tarmac.

Those record pulls can only go for a few kms can't they? How do they get around tight corners?

Are there even hills in the outback?

But I guess if there are, when the front is going up one hill the tail is still gaining inertia from coming down one.

Cheesy grin

Just released my first open source project!

Oiled!

Converts videos with show, season and episode info in the filename title into mpeg4 for the iPhone / iPod Touch, filling in the show, episode and show description so that iTunes files it correctly.

Awesome!

Found it interesting that was only R16 - I guess we've gone the way of the US where it's ok to have gratuitous violence (I didn't actually expect to see Eli's baseball bat hit the Germans head. Then he kept going......), so long as there is no sex.

So the physical OPSM store charges 6x as much as their online store? How the fuck do they justify that? A "you're not online" tax?

New higher-res Google Earth imagery of Christchurch - looks like a Wednesday last summer - New recycling bins are out, the leaves are on the trees, and the pool is uncovered.

Yes - you can almost make out the makes of cars up driveways.

We've been interviewing for someone to do some graveyard shifts recently and sent the 'thanks but sorry' email to the unsuccessful applicants this afternoon:

Quote:
Hi there,

Thanks for your application for the role of Customer Support Specialist.
We have had a large number of quality applicants, and the selection process has been a difficult one.

Unfortunately we will not be progressing any further with your application.

Thank you for your time, and all the best for the future.
One of the applicants decided he'd reply to that with a last ditch effort to win us over.. or something.
Quote:
From: "Marc"
Your loss
Ashamed that we had hurt his feelings, this email was immediately put together and delivered with haste:
Quote:
Hi Marc,

I have to disagree.

Given that your CV listed the 'Position Applying For' as 'Technical Consultant', rather than Customer Support Specialist (which was the role advertised), and also taking into account that you are the type of person who replies with snippy comments to a generic 'no' e-mail, I think I am quite justified in believing that we haven't lost a thing by declining your application.

Thanks all the same, and best of luck with your future endeavours.
Thus the last restraints holding Marc back from capital letters and txt speak were removed and he owned us:
Quote:
From: "Marc"
M8... DON'T NEED YOUR SNOTTY REMARKS... KEEP THEM FOR YOURSELF... GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BUSINESS... AND DON'T SPAM ME AGAIN

Gears oiled with tears of laughter.
