She’s worked out the same thing that right-wing election-campaign managers have: social media can give you a small loyal audience of nutty true believers and also an outrage machine that means everyone else does your marketing for free.

You say cynical, I say disruptopreneurial!

Rang Vodafone the other day and at one point was given the line "do the needful". I don't think he was taking the piss.

Congratulations, you were talking to a person likely of Indian or Pakistani extraction.
Do the needful is a very common transliteration of an instructive phrase in many of the dialects from that area of the world.

I had a Sri Lankan colleague who would say this regularly through the course of business. I say it occasionally myself now, it's a nice shorthand.

Up from $179 last year. There must be short-sellers diving out of windows.

Tesla's market cap is (/googling) 98.63B right now. If it goes over 100B and averages 100B or greater for a month, Musk's ludicrous salary package kicks in. Right now he's working for free.

(where seeing one's personal wealth increase by 9 billion but taking no salary counts as "working for free" because capitalism)

They're not terrible dice to roll I reckon. Seems fairly benign, and there's the chance infection will inoculate the community from something more vicious down the line.

Seems pretty nasty to me. Dead piling up in Wuhan hospitals.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51245680

It's probably much more serious than the Chinese authorities are reporting.

I suppose it's to be seen the seriousness of the event. Of course if it is especially dramatic, it'll be on us by the time we know.

The dice are definitely rolling in my favour, I might have to buy a small chest freezer on TradeMe, depending on how local prices fare.

Seafood may be among first trade casualties of coronavirus

My information bubble makes this seem less dramatic. There's certainly no lack of incentive for people to play up the drama of the situation via social media.

Yep, very glad to be living in regional Victoria when shit like this breaks out. Not so glad, however, when bushfires force us to live out of our car for over a week. Eh, pros & cons...

Whether the reported severity is real or not, the reaction is very real. Widespread fear, business slow down, economic downturn.

Of course I am referring to the get rich quick scheme of Jude Law’s social media conspiracy theorist in Soderbergh’s “Contagion” - a movie that now looks like a documentary.

In all seriousness though, there’s one thing that everyone must remember: in times of crisis the Chinese government lies. Do not believe any anything it announces. Even if it admits to lying, that admission will be a lie.

Yeah, I just saw it a couple months ago. Wondered if 'forsythia' was a movie reference to a.. Frederick Forsyth novel or something.

Basically add a zero to the end of any PRC official figures.

CNN: Inside reporter's rush to escape Wuhan before virus lockdown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idJMfQzB9o0

first comment:
"Reporter: This is Wuhan, DO NOT come here unless absolutely necessary. The whole city is under quarantine due to a virus spreading at an unpredictable rate and they are trying to contain it.
Reporter: We must escape the quarantine, fly back home to a highly populated city and uber to the office"

CNN reporters are fucking dumb. They also sent someone to Syria after the sarin gas attack to go sniff a contaminated backpack on camera.

hands up who remembers that facemasks are literally illegal in one particular part of China

A part that the Chinese government wouldn’t lift a finger to help in the event of a disaster

What could possibly go wrong
