To be fair, when DOOM came out in 1993 I didn't really notice - I was more a pinball/coin-op/Amiga/SNES guy at that time, and DOS games weren't really my thing.

I didn't get my first taste of DOOM until some time in the summer of 94-95.

i remember sneaking downstairs with my brother at night to play the doom demo that came on the windows 95 game cd. you know the one where you walk around inside that spaceship and go up to the various consoles in order to play the games? and it had like fucking 30 games on it, like mech2 etc. superb disc.

my mum would always snap us though. ears of a fucking hawk.

That CD was awesome. I loved Fury3 with my Sidewinder 3d Pro.

I was too young for Doom really. Not too young for the actual game, I just didn't have access to a PC at the time, it was an unreachable wonder in the computer shop.

How about the first time you played a multiplayer game with a whopping THREE OTHER PEOPLE!

Still remember running up and down the hill from Menace's house with Doom pkzip'd across ~16 disks. Every time I'd get back one would be corrupt.

Finished reading Masters of Doom by David Kushner a few weeks ago, really enjoyed it.

Doom convinced me to stop being a tight bastard and buy a decent soundcard, thus the new release/hardware upgrade cycle began...

Doom was a massive leap forward for gaming when it was released. The graphics were amazing and the whole concept of sharing a 3D space with other players was still a novelty. I had to read a fucking manual on networking and become familiar with scripting and various protocols (things I otherwise had zero interest in) just to get the dial-up working - that's motivation.

and another 4mb of memory... so I could run doom without first disabling smartdrv.exe
soundcard+cdrom = $1000
4mb memory = $500

ffs.

The game I never got to play due to poverty/hardware requirements was "Under a Killing Moon".

I just found it online for $4.99USD through gog.com. It's a 1.4 GB download, and it's 20 years old! Try spanning that bastard onto floppies with ARJ/ZIP...

I remember splashing out my entire performance bonus on 4MB RAM and a Video Blaster card.

7th Guest was the big game for me - spanning 2 CDs.

I think at one stage I sold my car to by my girlfriend a 21st present, oh, and an AWE64 for me. Up until then audio had been a novelty factor based on a bodged up parallel port and some resisters so I could play Amiga MOD files.

RAR was revolutionary, you could transfer games across 2 pcs with just 2 disks!
No more of pkzips 'insert last disk first'

Then there was serial + interlink.exe + go do something else for a couple hours...

I'm pretty sure I used to play dial up descent with TnT
