I thought it may be thread specific - had it for ages in the Politics area, yet others were fine.

If I was a self-driving car and suffered brake failure... Well, I have certain morals, and I'm consistent in those morals.

pretty sure i'd take the option where the car was watching the road and would have seen them approaching the crossing or reduced speed in advance of the crossing therefore slow enough to drop down to a low gear or safely turn off the ignition or go for a gap in between or have the driver alerted or ...

Yes granted, but you need to work within the model given, which doesn't allow those as an option. IF someone has to die because it was completely otherwise unavoidable, who would you choose?

I would assume the system would know the vital stats of pretty much everyone.

I lean heavily towards non-intervention.

Its a bit bollocks when I can take the test again (which had different scenarios) and basically get a different result.

All my answers were along the lines of - Keep driving straight, with a couple of exceptions. None were to do with who was involved. More who was in the wrong.

Did you run them over, as opposed to running over a large man and a young girl on the other side of the street?

FYI: I got maximum value for humans, babies, fit, and successful people. Large older criminal pets can die for all I care.

Upholding the law and choosing intervention were definitely secondary for me. It always came down to the casualties.

Thumbs up

I signed up to 3D Hubs, registered my printer and, to my surprise, got a real life order (a Daft Punk helmet).

It's a very useful interface in that the customer provides the model file(s) up front and it calculates volume automatically so that quotes are meaningful.

If anyone wants something printed, check me out:

Are they 8" holes Max? Reusing old speakers, or using new drivers?

In the absence of veneer, paint them black

Have you seen these designs?

http://www.billfitzmaurice.com/

I'm going to try the AutoTuba and if it is as good as he claims (it uses an 8" sub!), get serious with a pair of Titans

newish 6.5inch speakers recovered from a dead active sub that had two drivers.

i don't know the specs of the drivers but the sub was rated at 120watt so presuming 60watt each.

didn't follow any plan as i don't know anything about the drivers and haven't even done any resonance testing. just built a size to take the driver's diameter plus space for a port and tweeter if needed. the hole at the back is for the terminal plate.

the project was just an excuse to spend some time in my dad's garage

It's funny but I can actually follow (not specifically agree with) her argument here.

Quote:
In other words, not all men are hegemons and some men fare much more successfully than others in the competitive economy of gender
performance that is established through hegemonic masculinity. In late modernity, which is characterized by a focus on material possessions,
psycho-sexual economies of hegemonic masculinity extend across material surfaces, which include and indeed are exemplified by carbon fibre surfaces.

Can you fill me in? After a couple of reads of your posts I realised I could take it a number of ways.

As an aside you shouldn't be surprised to find a paper titled as such in a journal called: "Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education".

The abstract is quite compelling, although no doubt the content is disturbing. Research on girls aged 12-15 and how they negotiate complex gendered and sexual mores in a community where they experience ubiquitous feelings of fear, risk, vulnerability and violence... *shudder*

Well, to make sure that we're operating from the same understanding I'll go to a dictionary. I'll also make the assumption that you're not talking about the tasty food (though I can't be certain of this of course).

noun
1.
BRITISH
lengthy but vague or trivial talk or writing.
"we've edited out some of the waffle"
synonyms: prattle, jabbering, verbiage, drivel, meaningless talk, nonsense, twaddle, gibberish, stuff and nonsense, bunkum, mumbo jumbo, padding, flannel, verbosity, prolixity; etc.

Now seeing as you didn't specifically identify if you thought the entire papers are waffle, the specific quote that I posted, or simply the headlines.

Having looked over the first paper that Ab posted, while it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it certainly doesn't meet the definition of waffle that I posted above.

In fact the quote that I posted is the exact opposite of waffle, in that it is specific, focused and clear.

But hey, it's a national pastime to bash on things that we haven't bothered to try and understand (unless it's science, in which case we just accept it without any critical thought).

Even the term "soft science" is a result of hegemonic masculinity imposing its value system on waffle. By calling it "soft" we take away it's power and virility. Furthermore, the term "waffle" is regarded as "sweet" and not masculine. Beneath this seemingly innocent phrase lies a patriarchal suggestion: food and femininity go hand in hand - the all-to-familiar social construct of women belonging in the kitchen.

[Though I would note that this paper isn't from a scientific research tradition and doesn't claim to be]

To be clear, some people love to use excessive verbiage as padding in their writing to A) make themselves appear more intelligent and/or B) disguise the fact that their point is actually simple.

As a side note, I read almost all of that Carbon Fibre article and it's just absolute twaddle.
