I don't think you're wrong. It's just like any number of science shows that have been on TV all throughout my life that contained about 250-500 words of information stretched out over 40 minutes. At least with TED, the videos are usually much shorter!

The information being communicated in many TED videos is more than the verbatim I think. You get a much stronger sense of how the speaker weighs the information than you would from any written article. You also get an experience of their energy and passion for their field of expertise. Maybe that comes across to you as self-congratulatory wankery, but I can't fault being excited about your work. Seems a damn sight better than not being so.

Maybe there are people who use TED as their sole source of scientific knowledge, I mean, there are all kinds of idiots out there, right? I don't really think that devalues TED though.

Volvo brakes aren't the most comfortable. At least not in the generation of cars mine is from. After my old car they're a bit of a shock. The pedal range is really short, so it's hard to finesse your braking, and very easy to brake harder than you'd like. They work bloody well when you need them though. I've been in emergency braking situations on the open road twice since I got that car, and the performance was amazing.

I think the point of both of those videos was comparing the automated braking system between trucks and cars. Rather than regular brakes on regular cars.
