Then it becomes "Brad Pitt and his fugly whining wife, versus the zombies that run" rather than completely fucking WWZ in the pooper .... and watchable ... sorta? That being said if you havent read the books ... and can't be arsed get the audio books with Mark Hamill reading etc ... really good to listen to [or read if you can do wurdz!]. Luckily the missus and I listened to them while we were driving across 'murica so she understood why I was hesistant as to even bother watching this...

Odd Thomas was pretty faithful to the book but it seemed like more of a teen movie than an adult movie. I dunno if that's the right way to describe it it was just a bit simple.

However it did have a more "Pitch Black 2" than "Chronicles 2" feel, and took a while to find its feet/direction... But overall not that bad (please note .. I may still be suffering after effects of WWZ shitness creating a contrast .. but the old man liked it anyway :P)

saw Gravity last night.
weakest part (other than crazy luck..this is a movie i guess),was the shop on ms bullocks lower-half. beloved nearly fell out of her seat at a couple of the '3d' moments. good fun

Yes I saw Gravity in 3D at Imax. Although I usually avoid 3D like the plague, this is a worthy exception. If you're a space nerd there are going to be a few nitpicks, but generally I thought the plot was engaging and the effects and camera work amazing.

The first thing I noted was the lack of gore for a Z flick. I guess that's what comes of making it M rated - or I've been attuned to the close up headshots in TWD. Running zombies I can handle in this context - George Romero doesn't own the cannon, and the fast turning aspect and "Rage" origin could make them more 28-days-ish. Probably more of something for Cryocore to comment on though. As far as sticking to the book, well, yeah. Pretty loose. Although the post war interview style would have been difficult to pull off - basically everything in flashback would give away the ending. Pity the didn't explore more locations - or the bit with the zombies walking from country to country underwater (unless that was see as a rip of the river crossing in DotD) or the frozen winters and Canadian/Russian bits. And whilst kowtowing to China and moving the origin to Korea (or was it India in the end?) may make economic sense it detracted from the cause being linked to rapid economic growth founded on subtle exploitation. Maybe they should have used Dubai instead So yeah - bit of a Meh, but in the end it was almost family viewing. |

The Descent is very good.
Suspense / Horror / Gore that takes itself and it's universe quite seriously indeed. I like that, it doesnt fall like so many other horror movies into being hilarious and ridiculous when the plot reaches fever pitch. It reaches the peak and it's great! |

It's basically the SW:SE how it should have been; with the really lame bits removed (e.g. CG Jabba scene), the bits that were added for no good reason removed (e.g. various shitty CG animals and droids removed from Mos Eisley), colour fixed across the whole movie (e.g. the interior of the Death Star is now grey rather than metallic blue), the Death Star is now orbiting a planet while under construction, Darth Vader's voice is pitch shifted to match how he sounds in Empire and Jedi, so on and so on. And AMAZINGLY well-done. The attention to detail is incredible. The guy went to the extent of fixing typos in names in the credits.
Full list of changes: http://swrevisited.wordpress.com/anhr-change-list/ I downloaded both but kept the "purist" version, because that's how I roll. |
11th November 2013, 14:13 | #2836 |
Mmm... Sacrilicious
|
The Purist version still has all the Special Edition changes though doesn't it? That page says "PURIST (around a 4.7 GB disc, without the changes marked below)" which I believe just refers to the DVD5 and DVD9 changes.
I think I have an earlier Adywan edit so I'm going to grab it again but I believe the DVD9 version is the "best" version to get based on the listed changes... I.e. I don't know why it's called the "Purist" version... |

Yeah true, if you want "pure" then you should be watching Harmy's Despecialized Edition instead.
Despecialized is "the original theatrical release as it would look if it were mastered for DVD today". Revisited is "the Special Editions with shitty 1997 visual effects replaced with their equivalents from the 2011 Blurays, shit that shouldn't have been put in there removed, unfixed mistakes fixed, and shit that should have been there in the first place added". Revisited Purist is still based on the SEs but it doesn't have elements from later movies added in. I watched the DVD5 version of Revisited and love love loved it, but the presence of anachronistic musical themes - particularly the Imperial March - just didn't work for me. That's the great theme of TESB and having it in Star Wars just feels out of place. |

I had no idea any of that stuff existed. Tell me which one I need to watch and I will watch it (dont really want to watch 4 different versions to decide whats best).
