but then, I do wear a tie pin so that my tie doesn't swing every time I move.

I agree, wearing a tie isn't uncomfortable and it looks good but, after more than a century of ties, I think we need a decent fashion change.

Sounds like Draco is trying to justify wearing a cravat.

Notably, it only seems to be "old" companies that still want employees to wear a tie.

Most innovative newcomer companies that are surging up the ladder, such as say, TradeMe - don't have this policy.

Yet when I was last at their office on work there was a fair proportion of their staff who were wearing ties... [so even though it may not be policy it's still seen as being more presentable]

It's as much a "wanky fashion thing" as anything else. I'll confess to wearing a tie when I've had a date straight after work or know a hot sales rep is coming in and I want to look professional.

WHy do you think there's so many hook up's at weddings (where everyone is looking swanky and there's "love" in the air)?

Looking swanky, sure, but hardly anyone wears a tie to a wedding anymore, except for weird old Uncle Nigel.

Ties just remind me of old people, and obnoxious office juniors. Would not go a guy in a tie.

I don't know if it works on uber cool chicks like you, Ritalin - you know, the type of girl that posts on a gaming forum and makes comments on the hotness of females in the Hottie of the Day Threads...

But on the regular female who isn't cool enough to spend time in internet forums, well dressed men have a presence.

Personally I'd get a replica if the price was right and it still had mad nuts.

Well you do have a point there, but it's all relative. I personally wouldn't buy a $20,000 watch because of how many hours $20,000 takes me to make - but to a guy who is making $40,000 a week?

Buying a replica is like buying a Porsche - you do it because you want the appearance of being rich - that's just wanky.

I see your point, but completely disagree. I've always been an exotic car nut, but lately I think spending $2m on a Bugatti Veyron is the height of ethical decreptitude and just fucking ridiculous.

But if you can't afford the original... don't pretend. That's just lame in extremis.

Ah, the ones you claimed were ridiculously shallow a wee while ago? These the "regular females" you're talking about?

Everyone is shallow in some shape or form, dear.

I don't think there exists a female who isn't shallow under the age of 30 in New Zealand. Our society isn't made for deep thinkers who have a good grounding in a large area of subjects.

Or something like a nice new Nissan GT-R which floors pretty much everything more expensive for much less $ anyway.

Eh? I mean seriously eh?

Last wedding I went too 90% of the males were wearing ties - in fact I can think of only one wedding I've been too where it was casual...

Ties are still pretty much standard formal attire -they're just being weeded out as business attire.

Heh, fair enough - must just be the people I associate with...
I've been to three weddings in the last year, and only about 1 or 2 guys under the age of about 45 were wearing ties - except the wedding party, of course. But then at one of the weddings not even the groomsmen wore ties. *shrug*

Diff'rent strokes, and all that.

what? oh... yeah that's a good gauge too. Except then you sing it swapping "love" for "intelligence". You might have to put it in a different time signature.. she'll dig it.

They just look ugly. If I was spending $120k on a car, I'd probably look for a second hand Audi R8 or finance the other 120k and buy it new.
