A parent of a Whangārei Boys’ High School student says he didn’t let his son go on the fatal Abbey Caves trip because he was concerned about safety.

Scotty Booth has a son in year 11. Stuff has seen an email – sent from Booth to the school’s head of outdoor education on Monday night – asking if the excursion would go ahead, given the forecasted bad weather.

Booth didn’t receive a response, so he pulled his teenaged son from the trip.

How does this even happen in this age of what some would call OTT health n safety rules?

My son spent a few months in Scouts and they have endless rules and checks around safety, even when it’s an outing organised by one of the kids. Their safety procedures were inbuilt into everything they did to the point that safety seemed automatic.

There is still confusion around the situation and police have not confirmed there was a gunman. However, at about 8.30am, Auckland mayor Wayne Brown told TVNZ that he believed “the shooter’s actually dead…but no one is actually sure about that”.
