PS3: alright, what the fuck upnp/dlna media server actually fucking works

anyone?

ive tried:

tversity(windows):works quite well but the service either stops working or the server stops responding to requests

mediatomb(linux):works ok but is SO slow, and doesnt seem to transcode, at least definitely not out of the box with alot of tweaking. the hardcore linux geek in me wants to use this, but the real person part, says what the fuck, it shouldnt need to be this hard.

twonky(windows): shit, doesnt support or transcode half my files

umm probably a couple of other shit ones.

maybe ive been a windows admin too long and have become truly lazy, but isn't there a media server out there that just serves a variety of media reliably?

anyways. who uses what?

We just use Twonky for Linux, but only for MKV stuff which has had the container converted to VOB. No complaint, stable as.

For everything else we use XBMC running off a samba share on the same box as Twonky. The PS3 has a long way to go before it gets anywhere near that good.

There are actually PC and Mac XBMC ports (think Mac Mini in the lounge) if you need more horsepower. I've never looked into them though, so no idea how stable they are.

I'm using tversity - Video rss feeds work, all media files I've tried so far have worked.

Maybe silly, but the refresh rate is set at 30secs (I think you can adjust it) so what you might be seeing is the program going into idle and the files not showing up immediately - you just need to give it some time?

Basically, none of them work well enough to be called a commercial-quality solution. The Nero solution comes close, but it is not 100% stable.

What I normally do is copy stuff onto the PS3 and then play it natively; it has never failed to play anything I've wanted it to.

Pretty sure Windows media player 11 can do it.

I am just using Tversity. I tried it before Divx support and it was shit. The new version is nice and fast and just works. I don't do any transcoding as everything seems to play.

I normally just copy a shit load of files onto my USB drive and play them off that, copying to the PS3 would be a pain.

I am playing over a wireless connection from my PC. Works really well for standard divx files. Anything high quality or raw mpeg does't play well over wireless.

Nero MediaHome? It's quite possibly the worst UPnP server available in terms of stability and performance IMO. The file structure drived me insane.

FUPPES really isn't too hard once you've got a config file sorted. There's a few around if you look on the forums. I occasionally come across a problem where the PS3 refuses to pick it up, in which case I reboot the PS3 and/or a rebuild of the FUPPES database.

I've been able to play most 720p content just fine over 802.11g (then again I've got 2 11dBi antennas at home).

Is that transcoding or directly playing?

I havn't really tried 720p content specifically, I tried some very high quality MKV files. I dunno what the quality was though.

I have standard antennas but I Also have two AP because my PC is about 40 meters from the PS3 which is right next to the AP.

My setup is not using speedboost or anything like that so it is all 54mb.

Directly playing, converted .mkv files. Thinking it about I've even been playing 1080p content with-out a hitch.

fyi, i agree, fuppes is the way to go for now, long as its setup right... plays 1080p for me, but i needed to hook up the wired connection for it to work reliably.

Only real issue I have, and I think it might be the fault of Tversity maybe, is if I pause something and leave it paused for a few minutes sometimes when I restart it there is an error so you have to start the movie from the start again.

To get around it I just quit out of the movie and go back in when I'm ready to restart it seeing the PS3 seems to keep your place for every file.

I've been using 2 different UPnP servers for the last week or so. I actually think having a combination of TVersity and FUPPES is the ultimate setup of greatness.

TVersity for it's ease of use and for playing random OGG audio files that won't transcode using FUPPES (annoying as hell). FUPPES for everything else.

I found FUPPES to be a little more stable than TVersity, although this can vary at times.

P.S. PS3 is the uber win media centre

Question: I have some HD files on my PC that are .mkv, will they play through this kind of setup, or do i need to convert them to .avi ?

Haven't had any luck with Fuppes and transcoding. Everything else is great.

mkv2vob works fine, just wish there was a linux command line option that worked - everyone I've tried turns 5.1 into stereo. I don't know enough and cbf'd learning about the mass options with video/audio transcoding/remuxing to play with it myself.

Annoying since mkv2vob seems to use mencoder etc anyway

Ta for link to old thread BaM, I didn't know there was a file format the ps3 could read that contained ac3.

Hmmm, I thought ac3 = dts, apparently not. This is why I'm not fiddling with files manually in linux.

I was already transporting the 5.1 to m2ts anyway. I assume there's basically no difference between using vob or m2ts to wrap the streams?

This is a tutorial that will teach you how to set up FUPPES, which is a free UPnP media server for PS3. With FUPPES you will be able to play HD movies (vob or mpg format), MP3s, DIVX, MP4 etc...

What you will need.
- FUPPES (http://fuppes.ulrich-voelkel.de/download/) get the windows_setup
- mkv2vob (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/mkv2vob)
- Windows XP
Note: this will work under vista, however streaming sometimes freezes due to some services not being enabled/ disabled in vista. If you would like to read up on this and add to this thread you are welcome.

START.
1. Install FUPPES
2. Right click the FUPPES icon near the clock and open the web interface.
- the only area you will need to access is the Configuration. Everything else is OK.
- in the configuration tab you will be able to share the folders that you want. There is no browse button so you will need to enter the address of the folder manually. (for example. c:/downloads)
3. You are done setting up FUPPES but leaving it like this will only play mp3s and a very limited amount of video files.

MODIFYING THE FUPPES CONFIG FILE ( allows you to play all formats video/audio)
1. When you were in the configuration tab in the webinterface you will notice a local address at the top leading you to fuppes.cfg
2. Open up that file in WordPad or Notepad ( i recommend wordpad since the text will be structured as opposed to notepad)
3. Once you have this opened you will see a lot of text.
4. Use the CTRL + F to search for text.
5. Search for PS3 and you will find a line "<device name=”PS3″ enabled=”false”>" ----> change the false to true to enable PS3 support.
You are now in the PS3 configuration area of the document.
6. Scroll down to
<file_settings>
<file ext=”ogg”>
<type>AUDIO_ITEM_MUSIC_TRACK</type>
<transcode enabled=”true”>
<http_encoding>stream</http_encoding>
</transcode>
</file>
<file ext=”mpg”>
<ext>mpeg</ext>
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/mpeg</mime_type>
</file>
….
</file_settings>

7. Where you see the ... insert the following text.
<!--video files-->
<file ext="mpg">
<ext>mpeg</ext>
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/mpeg</mime_type>
</file>
<file ext="mp4">
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/mp4</mime_type>
</file>
<file ext="avi">
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/divx</mime_type>
</file>
<file ext="wmv">
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/x-ms-wmv</mime_type>
</file>
<file ext="vob">
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/x-ms-vob</mime_type>
</file>
<file ext="vdr">
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/x-extension-vdr</mime_type>
<transcode enabled="true">
<ext>vob</ext>
<mime_type>video/x-ms-vob</mime_type>
</transcode>
</file>
<file ext="flv">
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>application/x-flash-video</mime_type>
</file>
<file ext="asf">
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/x-ms-asf</mime_type>
</file>
<file ext="vob">
<ext>mpeg</ext>
<type>VIDEO_ITEM</type>
<mime_type>video/mpeg</mime_type>
</file>
8. Most of the text you can find at the top of the document but i have changed some of the things to allow for direct vob support such that you wont have to convert from mkv-->vob-->mpg to watch HD movies.
9. SAVE THE FILE
10. Right click the FUPPES icon at the bottom and select rebuild database
11. Wait 2 minutes and then close and open FUPPES again.

NOTES:
Your PS3 should now see FUPPES automatically, no need to scan for media servers.
If your PS3 does not see FUPPES, make sure the PS3 is on and close and open FUPPES again.
When new files are added to the media server (video/audio files), rebuild the database and wait some time depending on how many files you've added. Usually 5 min/ 10GB of files.

CONVERTING MKV TO VOB.
1. Install the mkv2vob application.
2. Open it and go the configuration tab.
3. Change the following:
Video Transcoding: Never
Output File Extension: vob
Transcoding Codec: x246 (this doesn't really matter since transcoding is off)

A 10 GB movie file should take about 5 min to complete. (under process you should see MUXING)

VOB files will now be recognized and read by FUPPES through your PS3.

If you get an error with mkv2vob then theres a problem with the video or sound of the file. mkv2vob only reads AC3 audio and x246 video.

I'm referring to playing mkv's on the fly - not using mkv2vob.

At the moment I think it might actually be an underpowered box, I can see ffmpeg called and stuff starts, but nothing gets to the ps3.

Stuff converted using mkv2vob is excellent.

Wish they'd improve the ps3 interface for playing music though.

You may already know but just incase. PS3 doesn't play MKV files. If it is then it is transcoding somewhere.

I'm on Wireless G, but it still seems like it stutters on anything I play through Winamp media server or TVersity. It'll stop for a second or two every minute or so, frustrating enough to stop watching a movie.

wtb consistant connection. Having to copy all my media onto USB drive when I want to watch it is getting really fucking annoying.

This is a long shot but I had exactly the same problem with Twonky, due to the server having multiple IPs. Binding the media service to a single IP fixed it.

It's only single IP but it is DHCP all across the board (with my adsl gateway and wireless router being statics)

Wonder if making everything static would make a diff.

as silly as it seems it may well do, I find with my old router having forced statics to certain MACs solved my laptops connection issues, I would have to disable/enable the wireles nic 3 or 4 times previously to get a connection.

I have a NAS Dlink 323 with a inbuilt Upnp AV server. I stream all my movies via that. After a lot of research into firmwares it seems that the PS3 was fine for movie streaming at 2.4X and with the 2.5X update it seems that they broke something causing the streaming freezing bug. It does not matter what media server, or transcoding you do it seems that the cause lies with the PS3. Apparently after the 2.52 update things are a bit better but still I get freezes. Good on ya Sony!

Yeah - mine used to go nasty - even worse if I paused playback - that almost ensured it would crap out. So now I do like GT - copy it locally and play it from there.
