Why does Blackberry still have a stranglehold over South Africa? Are they just, literally, 5 years behind NZ on technology? (and so, 10 years behind the rest of the Developed World).

yeah returned a ip5 recently. lock button stopped working after ~2 months of use.

had to be fairly persistent for them to send a box with a new phone in it, they sure love people going to the "genius bar" (i couldn't think of anything worse)

It'll make me feel extra cool when purchasing my latest turtle neck.

I was planning on the Galaxy S4 but i'll wait N see how much of a fuck I'd give about it not being "metal". I used an Iphone4s recently, no complaints there, was easy to use, almost converted but decided i'd buy the latest and greatest (probably will wait and see if Iphone6 is mint prior to making any jump in 'that' direction).

Might just wait it out for a little longer and see what comes out

Don't say another Goddamn word. Up until now, I've been polite. If you say anything else - word one - I will kill myself. And when my tainted spirit finds its destination, I will topple the master of that dark place. From my black throne, I will lash together a machine of glass and brushed aluminium, and fueled by my hatred for bad design this fear engine will bore a hole between this world and that one. When it begins, you will hear the sound of aspergers screaming - as though from a great distance. A smoking orb of nothing will grow above your bed, and from it will emerge a thousand starving crows. As I slip through the widening maw in my new form, you will catch only a glimpse of my radiance before you are incinerated. Then, as tears of bubbling pitch stream down my face, my dark work will begin. I will open one of my six mouths, and I will sing the song that ends android

His experience of the phone was negative. He found it confusing, hard to use, and so unpleasant as to actually say "I don't like holding this phone, and I can't overstate how much that informs the experience of using it. It makes an awful first impression."

But it has neato whiz bang technical specs, so, like, Android.

it's a clear negative, or a clear positive depending on what you value as a consumer. The reviewer obviously thinks the S4 is poorly designed, that is enough to make it a "do not buy" for me because I value good design. Where the S4 excels is in it's guts and tech specs.

I wonder these things: are guts and tech specs important on a mobile platform? Are application developers pushing the hardware limitations of mobile devices to increase demand for higher specs? Or are android / windows phone makers just having a tech spec race for the hell of it?

Alot of those points are subjective. For instance, I thoroughly loved the photos my Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro took. Regarding image capture, photographers who care would have a Camera Camera for taking photos.

What's the point of having a faster processor when you have no need for the grunt? And no apps to make use of the power? All relevant movie editing or music making, or 3d modelling apps are on iOS only anyway.

The display may be technically better but who could tell the difference if we did a "blind" survey?

Battery life is a fine point, but at what weight cost? I like how the iPhone fits in the hand and is light to hold. Lasts 3-4 days between recharges. Seems reasonable

My phone just needs to do these things:
- Helps me in my work, and outside of work
- fit nicely in my hand and pocket. And sits absolutely flat face up on table.
- ringer sound not muffled in hand or pocket
- Suite of applications is consistently adhering to some design standards.
- Worldwide support.
- Added bonus: HUNDREDS of innovative music-making apps.

HOW it achieves these things, I do not care. The fact that the final product does these things is what is important to me.

Previous verge reviewer gives the S3 an 8 on design. New verge reviewer says S4 is an improvement on S3. But it's not aluminum and HTC is, so that's a 5.

I'm planning to buy the ivephone, but it will entirely depend on whether my ip4 still feels adequate to me. So far it's still doing an A-grade job, so I may end up going another 12-18months before upgrading.

I doubt many, if any, android havers have gone 3 years on the one phone.

Mmm kiiiind of. A top of the line flagship Android phone retails for about $850 normally? Latest top of the line iPhone is about $1300? So from a cost perspective I think you could replace your Droid phone more often.

i5 is $1049NZD for a model with 16gb memory (the same as the S4). So yeah at the same capacity the iphone is cheaper.

(Yes I know you can add sd cards to the S4)

okay fair enough top of the line prices are comparable but i imagine the average price paid for an android phone vs the average price paid for an iphone has a huuuuuuuge price gap therefore on average droid phones can be upgraded (or replaced) more frequently.
