@indigo...Figured one of those might do, I might see what options open up in a month or two, nothing excessive required at this stage but there's some decent cheap phones set to come out soon in that range I think.

Yeah I think you can get iPhone 3GS for around that price now too. There's a few Samsungs that are pretty good around that price, Galaxy Ace Plus, Galaxy Min, they're pretty user friendly.

I have a friend who is stupid to technology and he's away laughing on a Galaxy Ace Plus. My mum and dad both have the old Galaxy Aces and I've never heard a complaint from them.

I think the 3GS would be the best choice though if it's in that price range, it's very simple in terms of a phone and would be hard to stump anybody.

The cheap smart phones have come along way and, "asking for trouble" because they're not very savvy is a poor response, they'll be fine.

For what it's worth, I brought 4.8" no brand android off 1-day for $250, and it's great. Looks just like an S3 (although it doesn't claim to be one)
Also came with cool stuff like a spare battery etc.

Not everyone's cup of tea obviously. Have no expectation of any firmware updates or anything - and for Joe Blow its probably better he gets setup with a proper warranty/someone to go to if it craps out and he needs a replacement;

But for me, it's excellent for a great price. Great 3D, snappy UI, plenty of space, nice screen, good battery life, etc.

Also, the Galaxy Ace Pro (what non-Telecom vendors will say is the same as the Ace II) is NOT the same as the Ace II. The Ace II has better screen, and is newer.
The Telecom ones are pre-pay, work on 2dm and Voda no probs, and are not locked. You do have to put up with the Telecom logo on boot, though.

They do come with an annoying keyboard (autocomplete features that drive you nuts and wont turn off); but just install 'JellyBean keyboard' from Play and problem solved.

Have you actually used that one Titus?

Looks like exactly the kind of one I would avoid like the plague.
Single core 1ghz, Android 4 (ergh, rather have Gingerbread), generally the type that looks cool but when you get it it underperforms, is clunky as hell, and comes with the asian keyboard you can't uninstall, qq-chat, and a whole bunch of os custom stuff that you don't want ..

But that's comments without ever using it. Could be great.

Godamn, looking at that HTC One makes me want it more and more. Anyone know what price it would go for over here? Will it even reach our shores?

On the topic of deal site phones, a friend of mine bought one from 1-day and it is pretty much similar to that of a Samsung OS, but there are some hilarious typos, mostly on the drop down shortcut menu bar. The phone itself seemed to work pretty sweet though.

No I haven't. I haven't taken the Pepsi Challenge with a MTK6575 (single core) vs MTK6577 (dual core), so I can't say with any certainty how necessary dual core is. The MediaTek SoC is apparently a really good performer, and I've read and heard that single core is fine and Android doesn't make use of multi-cores very well anyway. That's really your only valid concern, because I'm not into restricting my app compatibility with Gingerbread, and going from Chinese -> Roundeye is not hard.

Does anyone have [experience with] a single core 1GHz Android phone? What chipset is it? How does it perform?

Yeah my phone is an MTK6577 and it runs sweet.
I just know from my experiences that with ultra cheap phones you often start out thinking you're getting a deal, but end up paying for it later in usability.

I've been out and about with an Android 4.x tablet today; came home and picked up the first device I saw, which was one of the kids' iPhone 3Gs running IOS 3, in order to drive tv/stereo/read news, etc. Fuck what a relief.

iPhones are better at some things - Androids are better at others.

iPhone Supremacy
Did a side by side "Shazam challenge" in a loud room. The iPhone correctly identified songs playing through the Apple TV + stereo. Both my clone phone and a legit Samsung failed to identify the song.
Conclusion: iPhone seems to have better mic quality [or the Apple TV transmits 'currently playing' information to Shazam on iDevices, which is still useful].

Android Supremacy
Used my phone as a hotspot for my Macbook until my migs ran out. Friend offered to use her iPhone as a hotspot coz she had oodles of data left. Macbook - couldn't connect. iPod Touch - couldn't connect.
Conclusion: iPhone hotspot is shit, even with Apple devices connecting to it.

I've never had a problem using Shazam from my Android phone. For me, it's a contest between Shazam and Sound Hound as to which is quickest.

This is something that has come up before, and the responses always seem to be either "it never works" or "it always works".

Totally agree, but not from a 'it doesn't work at all' perspective. It doesn't work consistently. iPad will connect to it, work for a little while, (sorry that's as 'accurate' as I can get), then iPad no longer has internet connection, even though iPhone is saying the hotspot is active. It annoys the hell out of me. Even my crusty old HTC desire can do this reliably.

I've found that the hotspot screen has to be on the screen for devices to connect to it. They won't connect if you turn hotspot on then go out of the screen before the device connects. Perhaps you had a signal drop out for some reason and then it won't reconnect?

Whether this is by design or not I don't know. Annoying but I hardly ever use it so not much of a deal breaker for me.

As a test, try leaving the hotspot screen open the whole time while using your ipad.

Always itchy

I spent all Christmas/New Years at the inlaws on the outskirts of Dunedin, and used my phone's data so I wasn't raping their (woeful-but-adequate for them) home connection. It worked *flawlessly* with my iPad. I did not encounter a single instance where the connection dropped on my iPad, with regular daily browsing, including some big downloads (that cooking book (250mb) and some other stuff that was part of the Apple 12 Days Of Christmas promo).

I assume people having a whinge about hotspoting their iPhones not working just don't know how to use it correctly? Which is pretty amazing given that you click on "turn on", then click on "connect" on the device that you want to connect (exactly like how you'd do it with an android!).

Maybe you should find a kid and ask them to set it up for you?

*edit*
You do not have to keep the iPhone unlocked or 'screen on' the whole time you use the hotspot. If you back out of the hotspot menu (which I did, a bunch, to keep an eye on my data usage via the vodafone app), it stays connected just fine, and shows a green bar along the top to indicate that's what it's doing. If you lock it... it does the same! It *does* drain the battery fast, but I don't think there's a single phone that wouldn't face that issue while hotspotting.

My iPad does that with regular wireless when my router is too close to the cordless phone.

Anything around that could be interfering with it?

Welp.. I keep saying that I never have any wifi issues, or tethering issues with any of my i-devices. Or i-devices to non-i-devices.

Dunno what to tell ya. It just does what it says it's doing...

I have had wifi issues with apple devices, certain access point chipsets with more than so many active users.

And also certain IOS versions + specific apple device and WPA2 encryption.

Both are well documented problems on the Apple forums.
