I have not done my research, or checked the peer reviews, so this may well be complete bullshit. But if not, this is the right thread:

I’ve been holding my breath on this one for so long. If it fails I’ll be crushed. I almost don’t want to think about it. But it’s off-planet now and I’m drunk and celebrating.

...because the Movie thread wasn't the right place.
Marcus House's rocket year in review. My favourite would be at 21:22 when Astra, with a five engine rocket giving a 1.25 thrust to weight ratio, fails an engine just after lift off. The maths works out - with only 4 out of 5 engines working, you get a reduced ratio of 1:1 until enough fuel mass has burnt off - so it just wanders off sideways. Every time I read more info about Webb it seems less and less possible that the crazy design and plan could ever work.

Fully paralysed man asks doctors for a beer after being given brain implant to communicate Scientists say they successfully gave a fully paralysed man a brain implant that allowed him to control a keyboard with his mind. And one of his first requests was to ask the doctors looking after him for a beer. The 36-year-old German man also asked for metal band Tool's music to be played really loud to him, requested goulash and sweet pea soups, and asked his four-year-old son to watch a Disney film with him. |

The problem with all these articles that 'say see this, it's going to cause a problem in the future', is it reinforces and normalises a public perception that this is something we have to deal with in the future. |

This is the calm before the storm. We're not living it until there are mass sterilisation events and we're facing the massive swell of migration that results.

There is an incredible amount of land that is currently largely uninhabited due to the climate being too cold. As that shifts, we'll see massive investment in unheard of areas. It'd probably take a century or two, but Siberia and Canada could see a lot of growth.
As that Goldilocks zone shifts though, how quickly do you think we'll see the equatorial population recede due to the issues that will arise there? Or will technology and infrastructure investment outstrip climate impact for the most part, and it'll all be Dubai 2.0, for the wealthy at least.

Once you get your head around Universal expansion, it makes sense that the star in question is further away than the travel time of almost twice the age of the Universe, but does beg the question, why don't they state this is where it was seen, rather than the star is.
