Paperboy - 2 years

Retail (Deka) - 2 years
Internet helpdesk analyst - 2 years
Small business network admin/hardware engineer/security analyst - 9 months

I'm 22 now, been working since I was 13 or something. I get really bored of staying in the same job, so 2 years seems to be my maximum for now... IT as a career I guess. Not because I enjoy it, but because I'm good at it.

so, if we are not counting the jobs that we paid under the table then i change my statement.

Change it to "one. Knife Hand in the meat works in Hawera"

instead of "too damn many"

[edit] infact, you all have me curious now. im gonna go sit down and try and remember how many "jobs" ive had.

Time for an update.

I am up to 10 jobs in 15 years now, 1.5 year average in each job, which I guess overall isn't bad.

Lat 5 years I have had another 3 jobs since the first post, 1 redundancy, which was the job before the one I have now, a real bugger that as I really liked that job

2 redundanices in the 15 years now.

And just for a contrast...

Pre "real jobs":
  • 8 years clean-up slave, gofer, wiring-in-cramped-places-guy, under-house-guy and general odd-job worker (when not at school) for Dad on various building sites.
  • 4 years part-time checkout operator @ The Warehouse
  • 2 summers @ CIT building/fixing PCs and reimaging several hundred PCs
"Real" jobs:
  • 2 months HelpDesk for Children, Young Persons and Their Families Agency (AKA CYPFA aka Da Gubermint) before I got pissed off at a manager that gave me a dressing down for using ping to see if a server is up.
  • 1 year contracting to BNZ's callcentre in several varied roles covering helpdesk, app programming, through to user training.
  • May 2000 to current (8-and-a-bit years) analyst programmer

Now into my 3rd month of my current job. My first "real" job.
That current job turned into 18 months. Then I buggered off on my OE where I had 4 or 5 jobs (But they don't count as they were contracts and I didnt give a shit so turned up hungover every second day).

Came back, was in my next job for a month then came to my current where I have been for 18.

So that would be 8 jobs in 8 years.

I'm going to ignore pre-'real' jobs; and I've also moved around different roles at the same employers, so I'll group them.

Employer 1 - Large Bank
- Call centre pleb - 1 year
- Better, more specialised call centre pleb - 8 months
- Internal Communications (essentially marketing to staff) - 1.5 years
TOTAL = 2 years, 2 months

Employer 2 - PC Retailer
- Branch Manager - 1.5 years

Employer 3 - IT Firm (UK)
- Direct Sales Guy - 6 months
- Business Development Executive - 2.5 years
TOTAL 3 years

Employer 4 - IT Firm (NZ)
- Account Manager / Client Director - 2 years and counting

Employers 3 and 4 are partner/vendor related, so arguably the same job, it's just that I moved back to NZ.

Think I'm in a similar situation to Sid, since leaving school:

6 months at British Car Auctions - awsome job ('specially when sports car sales were on), but crap pay/conditions and I knew it was only a fill-in really.
13 years for same company in London (variety of IT jobs, but same company)
4 years for Axon in NZ
2.5 years (so far) for Computer Concepts in NZ

So yeah, 4 full time jobs in coming up for 20 years.

Current job I've been in for almost 4 years - my previous most long standing was 3 years (though I changed positions in the organisation during that time). The rest of it has been temp contracts (for a couple of years) and a few which were less than a year (6 - 9 months mostly).

So maybe 10 jobs over 17 years...
