Same place for 6 years now. CIO is great and has leveled me up with a few promotions, he's also paid for my grad dip and is now paying for my 2nd year of my Masters program. I feel my time might be coming to an end though as I want to pursue other specializations in info sec.
Out of a team of 17 the only person who's left in the last 6 years left in a casket. Pretty unusual in IS to have such little staff change. |

Has anyone here (in NZ) moved to a new role and negotiated redundancy?
Im at 21 years in my current job, and at 52+ weeks of redundancy. Unfortunately we just restructured with the company in Au, and they liked the NZ team so nothing changed (the Au team got screwed). Dammit. But I have just been headhunted by my old manager, but the company (like most now) do not have redundancy. So I am going from a secure job with redundancy as a back up, to a new job that could be less secure and no redundancy, so I wanted to try and negotiate it. |

You should have the standard four weeks notice period as a default redundancy, but I'd ask for an additional week per year of service. That sounds pretty fair.

There is no redundancy requirement in NZ.
Are you referring to just the standard ending of an employment. |

Fortune favours the bold.
Redundancy can be a nice surprise, like finding $20 down the back of your couch. It’s a Plan B contingency in the event you are no longer needed. Plan A should be your unique value proposition that ensures you are the golden goose that always gets a payrise, and everyone wants to poach you (like now, with your old manager) My advice is to spend time planning on how you will be irreplaceable in your next job. Become bottled lightning for one company, and let the other company know they aren’t getting your best work anymore. The redundancy should sort itself out and fall in line behind your priorities. |

I think I've had 17 different jobs at 37.
My current job I've actually had 3 different roles, so maybe that's 14 different jobs? I reflect Nich's comments, with a slight build in that I try and be relevant to the market, rather than just the company. My current company recently tried to argue that I was at the top of my "band", and could only offer me a maximum of 10% increase. I knew the market rate for my role was 35% higher at the premium end (which I currently am) and I was more than happy to go to the market and try my luck. The kicker is I didn't want to leave, but I would have if they didn't give me a sizable bump. They came back with a 20% increase, still less than market, but I'm happy to trade off cash vs a place where I'm appreciated and my work valued. Anyhow, fortune favours the brave, but I'd also say well researched and prepared helps |

I've had 4 roles in the last 15 months
I'm starting another 1st October. Prior to that I'd been in one company for 18 years. Grad>Programmer>Senior>Delivery Lead 4 roles (and 14 Team Leaders - one of them 3 times) Fucking lol.

The concept of having an up & up career at a single company is so dead it's not funny. This is me over the course of my 19 year career so far.

Didn't start in mailroom - well, kind of did, opening cheques for payment processing. Now kind of in senior leadership. |

So supposedly I more than likely have ADHD, which explains why I always found it difficult to hold down a job, having said that I never got fired.
Being diagnosed with ADHD at 49 is interesting lol Crocos, I had a few suspects but could not confirm whos desk to shit on.

Picked up a contract back on the tools (infrastructure/info sec) and haven't looked back. Work from home the vast majority of the time now, fly an hour each way to client site one night per 2/3 weeks, fantastic day rate, contract renewed thrice already. About to start my pty ltd to move away from payg. Huge change in lifestyle at the end of last year means I'm no longer hypertensive, and doctor has taken me off the BP meds I was on. Promising fourth renewal coming up in June with what looks like an even better day rate. The icing on the cake is the brilliant Security PM and the other security consultant with whom I'm working - both great guys, heaps of fun to work with. Gears thoroughly oiled, and I'm feeling like a very lucky bugger to be where I am |
