What
aperture priority dose not allow you to control your shutter speed and that is what is needed for HDR photos. Most dslr's only allow you to bracket three shots and typically not in connection with aperture priority in any cases that I have ever seen.
Obviously you have much to learn about HDR photography and should be careful in you criticisms. |

Auto-bracketing is how you achieve HDR shots if you are a chump.
Real photographers will manually adjust the exposure dependent on the dynamic light conditions, and the result they are after. Therein lies the skill required for photography. |

My course teacher last year showed us the most simple method of first framing your shot, then zoom-metering on all the areas with different light levels (potentially requiring changes to whether you're using spot or centre-weighted / evaluative metering), and then average the overall exposure when you re-compose - obviously taking as much care as possible not to blow out any areas.
Adopting that approach has seen a massive improvement in the usability of my shots in post-processing, and often results in not having to do much post-work with light levels at all (obvious exceptions being massively high-contrast shots). Of course, you look like an ADD sufferer trying to take your shot... PS: Full manual. Always. PPS: Unless giving my camera to someone else to take a shot

Hrm... I usually use Aperture Priority. Then again I'm still in the very early stages of learning how to properly compose + I know half of sfa about the practical application of metering or levels.

If you cant do auto bracketing with aperture priority on your camera I would doubt you would be able to do it any other setting too. I think you have much to learn about the usage of your camera. |

Um, we're getting sidetracked here - this is meant to be a gallery. Perhaps this page could be moved to the Camera Question thread. I would like to see some more stunning pictures from the camera artists - there are plenty of you out there, looking at the earlier pages

My favourites in no particular order would be:
The tram. Nice action shot, looks full of energy. Tunnel entrance at sun rise/set(?) - nice colours, well balanced composition. Looking up through the buildings. Not sure how to word it. Might be that it's not really an angle that most folks use a lot day-to-day, and the novelty appeals? Not quite right, but... Hrm.

While you CAN use Auto-bracketing for HDR shots. It's the same as using P or even worse "Green Square" mode for all of your photos. HDR isn't the answer for everything and it depends on what you're trying to do. Here is an image I'm in the process of working through the post on. I used an Auto-bracket of -2,0,2 to get what I wanted. But that was only because from experience I was sure that there wasn't greater than the 7 stop range that auto-bracket gives me. I was also in a bit of a hurry. And that image is a stitch of 33 images (3 exposures of 11 images) as it is. If on the other hand I want to make a High Dynamic Range Tone Mapped image which I'm happy with, then I do as Ritalin says and make sure that I spot meter, plan my exposures and really take care of things. Here is another example. This is a combination of 8 Exposures (30" 20" 12" 5" 3" 1" 1/4" 1/20") and as it is I'm still blowing out highlights in one of the windows. Last time I checked in PS it had about a 10-12 stop range. You just can't capture a scene like that without checking the light levels and planning/manually setting the exposures. If I'd done this with auto-bracketing then it would look at best unpredictable, and at worse terrible. You have to know what you're trying to accomplish, what your limitations are, and then you can use the auto modes. If you use them before knowing what you're doing, then you're just shooting in the dark (or in the green) |

Nice break down of things dp I usually will not take the time to explain things in so great of detail on a form but I should so thanks for that. Nice shots by the way here is a shot I took that consists of 25 exposures some stitching and some burning

Nice work. I love the "godlights" I'm trying to perfect a workflow for HDR where I'm doing it all with layers in CS3 and then painting in the details with the wacom. Still getting there. |

I dont have any HDR photos I can show, but have previously posted photos in this thread. I dont make a living from photography but have made a few bucks here and there from published work in magazines.
And I agree that HDR isn't the end all of photography, I would even go as far to say it can be gimmacky, people often go way overboard with it too. I hope to get some good shots up Mt Angelus this weekend, so if i do i'll post them up. |
