Interesting times in the Pacific, with likely change of leadership in Samoa having some wider implications:

Samoa to scrap China-backed port project under new leader Fiame Naomi Mata'afa

Not going without a fight:

Samoa: edict stopping parliament from sitting overturned

Quote:
Tuimaleali'ifano Va'aleto'a Sualauvi II last night suspended parliament "until such time as to be announced and for reasons that I will make known in due course" in a new edict which voided his previous one calling parliament to convene on Monday.

However, the court called the decision by the Head of State "unlawful', paving the way for parliament to convene tomorrow as previously scheduled.

Sitting of Samoa parliament cancelled; constitutional turmoil deepens

If there was any time for Samoan leadership to slip the shackles of democracy, it's now. They'll have the support of China and there's no one to stand up for the alternative.

Samoa incumbent leader rejects first female Prime Minister's swearing in as 'treason'

Quote:
Fiame Naomi Mata'afa from Samoa's election-winning FAST party has been named the country's first female Prime Minister, in a ceremony her rival called "treason".

She named her Cabinet this afternoon in the ceremony in a large marquee tent erected on the Parliament grounds.

Whether this ad-hoc ceremony will be recognised as legal and official remains to be seen. The rival HRPP party was not there, nor was there any sign of the judiciary, the speaker, or the head of state. The appointed clerk of parliament acted as FAST's main legal counsel.
Going to be an interesting week in Samoa.

I would love to see the risk registers that previous security consultants have handed to the executive branch of the dhb. CEO head and other c suite staffers should roll if they accepted the risks without providing appropriate remedies.

Don't suppose you could be more specific? What actions were divulged that would've tilted their hand?

The biggest vulnerability is already in the public domain: David Clark is the Minister in charge.

Tauranga crowd jeers at speaker addressing them in Te Reo Māori

Quote:
A woman greeting a Tauranga crowd in Te Reo Māori was told to "speak English" and jeered as she tried to continue.

Kim Williams was addressing about 300 people at the launch of the Tauranga Ratepayers Alliance at Mount Maunganui. She told the Bay of Plenty Times she had spoken mostly in English and only about "six words" in Te Reo Māori when the crowd began to yell at her.

Pretty much no progress in Samoa this week. The winners want to stay the winners, the losers want another go of it.

I bet those same "locals" also only ever call the place "The Mount" as well, no way would they ever say "Maunganui", those silly Maori words and place names

National MP's tweet about tangi held at school 'ignorant' and 'racist' - board chairwoman

She is of course right, but people got their English book of words to tell them what the truth is and the good book tells us gangs are bad. We damn well sure aren't going to take the time to understand why there are gangs and why they have such strong support in some communities.

Yeah, people don't really get the Mob runs things in parts of NZ. Coincidentally I had some Mob connected folk move in next door, recently. Almost gives me the warm fuzzies of home.

I admit that my first response was wtf!?! a school being closed to accommodate a criminal organisation. Then I remembered experts in this area reckon that alienation and the tough uncompromising approach doesn't work.

I'm enjoying the realisation that NZ isn't as colonised as I thought. I mean, I knew, but you know knowledge can take awhile to crystalise.

It's their community, they don't need the Queen's permission to live their lives, to mourn their dead.

people can start complaining about closing a school for a tangi, when they stop "closing" schools for bible indoctrinati^h^h^h studies.

I've noticed that people suddenly become concerned about democracy in NZ when it looks like Maori might get a bigger say in their communities. The say they're legally due.

Māori seats a step to 50-50 power share, says former Taranaki mayor

Andrew Judd's a legend. Gets elected mayor, decides to up skill his cultural competency, has his eyes opened and discovers what's up. Chooses principles over position.

I heard a headline yesterday about Collins farewelling Smith.
I thought he had died. I figured that was more likely than him retiring.

I guess it still has the status of a "confidential inquiry", so it's not something that can be reported on.

Yeah, true. You yell at me, you're the one who should feel unsafe. Maybe that's what happened? Nick finally came across a staffer who actually wasn't afraid for once, he was caught out?
