We went to a fish, er, specialist place in Mt Roskill this morning and showed a worker there who immediately proclaimed that it was indeed Native NZ Kokopu (adult whitebait). Apparently due to being caught it lost most of its colours and went semi transparent as a defense mechanism.

Alphonse now has a new home in the worker's personal pond with a proper temperature that's suited to him. They were quite amazed at how he's faired after being in the jaws of a cat.

So that's that, a happy ending and no one died :P

Still no freaking idea where it came from, though.

Struggling to get through Big Bang Theory S1, it really does seem like generic US sitcom and I have no idea why there's so much rave for it.

What I don't get is why Big Bang Theory gets rave reviews and two and half men is treated as the spawn of satan.

Don't get me wrong 2.5 men is not what I hold up as the current equivalent of python but it has much smarter writing and pacing than big bang. The sarcasm level is plenty high by american sitcom standards.

I guess it has charlie sheen and boobs and critics maybe are all ex art students so they hate that and the other one has science in the name so they feel better saying it is awesomes (even though they only did first year chem in their failed attempt at a double degree and so don't really get the pun).

I wouldn't hugely agree with donkey balls as I will watch 2.5 if nothing else is on, watching donkey balls is trickier as I have no donkey (although I admit I would probably watch them instead if I did have one or more donkeys).

My point is more that one gets rave reviews and one absolute scum of the earth reviews when they are both in the same quicksand of soul sucking; albeit 2.5 has its nose above water.

Fortunately now we have an alternative in that timeslot, I think it might be ninja warrior. Still stupid but less so.

Yeah that's the one. It's a bit of a small dark shop (for obvious reasons) but it was quite nice and the guys were really helpful. As soon as one of them saw the fish, he immediately was like "Yep that's a Kokopu." And it was nice of him to take it in himself, they only had warmer waters there so he has put it into his pond.

I know it's just one fish and it's slightly hypocritical because I love fishing, but I didn't want to eat this dude and he fought pretty hard to survive, felt it decent to give him a chance.

I'm going bonkers trying to figure out what to apply for to get my son a passport of some description.

He's not technically an automatic Aussie (phew) because I'm here on a special category visa (as are all kiwi's who arrived after 2001), so an Aussie passport might not be the way forward.

Looks like I might have to apply for NZ citizenship by descent ($200) then apply for an overseas passport ($170)

Any alternatives that people have gone through before?

Can you apply for an Aussie passport, and how much is that?

I think your only option is that which you describe: apply for NZ citizenship by descent and then apply for a NZ passport for your boy.

I thought that children born to SCV holders in Australia got Aussie citizenship by birth, but that does not appear to be the case.

It actually appears that right now your son has no citizenship of any kind. Which is a bit freaky.
