My other half is having difficulty setting up a wooden train track using a picture as a guide. He's sweating like he's on the krypton factor or some shit..

Hah! Wasn't a slot car fan as a kid, huh? I think I can build any track from a picture, having had so much practice.

Ooh, that reminds me, those of you with young cats, get a slot car set. Best. Cat. Toy. Ever.

Oliver was a huge fan of motor racing, and I'm pretty sure it stemmed from his misspent youth chasing my slot cars. I've considered getting another slot car set so I can try it out on the rabbits.

It's not, by chance, a big circle and a little circle that just don't seem to want to go in properly?

i can remember a wooden toy train set that i had as a kid. it had a handdrawn diagram of a mint layout with loops/sidings and an overbridge. one day i found it easier to build the damn track myself rather than nagging dad to set it up for me.

hmm, wonder what excuse i can give to the wife for buying our 4.5 month old a train set now

One of our girls is turning 2 tomorrow so this is one of her presents to wake up to. I imagine the kids will be fighting over it tomorrow also

Thought I'd also share my decorating failure.. It's supposed to be The Wiggles, but instead they look like creepy overweight paraplegic dudes with comb overs. It was just easier to make them sitting down instead of standing up but I didn't realise it would look so weird...

I came home and found some paper on the bench - the kids had made some "licenses" to put in their wallets.

There was a cooking license for making dinner.
A driving license for the car.
Some random ID for proving age.
A bar license, because that's what he lady at the pub has...

and a longer ray license.

Longer ray.

WTF is longer ray, and why do you need a license.

They stay home for two weeks and suddenly they think ladies should dress up like Thunderbirds and serve drinks.

Awesome. Imma gonna stop asking questions soon...

Hehe.. kids are weird..

So you're not even curious to know what a "Longer ray" is? I can think of at least one potential use for such an item if it did exist..

Would that be Lay Dee's Longer Ray Fornor Teeness?

My guess is they have been reading NZG, in particular Simon's erudite posts...

Oh man that looks like some Thomas branded trains you got there, that must have set you back - that stuff is so rediculously overpriced. (no kids myself, but I have to talk my partner out of spending $50 on a train for her Thomas-mad nephew every birthday...)

That said, I had an electric thomas set when I was a kid, that was mint.

In hindsight, I think they were looking to set up their own casino, with the high rollers room upstairs having cocktail waitresses dressed as you mentioned. Too much 2 1/2 Men methinks.

Nah, it's a "Thomas compatible" train table set.. we just had a couple of Thomas trains already which we chucked on there..

Fucked if I'd spend close to $1k on a proper Thomas one...

I have discovered a cure for my Quasimodo issue of pulling a back muscle on one side. Sleep in such a way that a muscle on the other side goes into spasm, so you're messed up on both sides.

Those expensive, licenced toys are so pointless. Thomas the Thankless Engine kit is probably made in the same factory as the much cheaper knock-offs.

My old man is into trains big time, and has been all his life. At one stage he had a model shop just off Linwood Ave - I'd help out on Saturdays, and there were some interesting types that came in...

Anyway, he now produces parts for jokers who like to make scratch built stuff out of brass and whitemetal etc and does the occasional build for chaps overseas that CBF'd making the kits themselves. Trains have come a long way - all digital controlled now, and you can have two trains on the same track going different speeds in different directions, and switching light colours when reversing - mostly done with fibre optics.

Anyway - back to Thomas - he has one of those battery powered sets where it perfroms a perptual loop of shuffling loads of little balls. Very cool to watch, and the grandkids think it is much cooler than an exact replica of the last steam engine that ran on the main trunk line.

Hmm - now that I think about it, there is only one motorised chassis that swaps the tops automatically.

MHG went through a major Thomas phase from about 2 to about 4. This was him just after his third birthday, jesus that seems a long time ago. He looks little.

Anyway. Yeah, the branded wooden Thomas toys are crazy expensive. We got an "Imaginarium" brand table with track and roundhouse and shit, and then a pile of no-name track pieces from Ikea, all the same gauge so it all plugged in together. The Imaginarium table was FTW because it has storage drawers built in, and the Ikea track pieces saved us a ton.

Are there Ikea stores in NZ?

I don't see what kids now see in Thomas, Ringo doesn't even do the voiceovers any more - what's the point?

Fuck the new CG-animated Thomas shit, but the old real-toy-steam-engine TV episodes with Ringo as narrator are gold, even some of the older Michael Angelis episodes. The new stuff is bullshit, it's like some marketing gimp has tried to turn Thomas the Tank Engine into a mixture of Pokemon for toy marketing and Bob the Builder because he's So Hot Right Now. "GOTTA COLLECT THEM ALL! AND HERE'S AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ON SHARING AND INCLUSIVENESS STARRING A DIGGER AND A LORRY!"

Fuck off you cocks, here's the original series and Percy getting emotionally brutalised by Gordon and here's Henry getting bricked up in a tunnel and abandoned for refusing to follow orders. There's your fuckin' social message.

Nevertheless, perhaps it was because Henry was a racist!

The story was considered so controversial that it was actually reported in the national press. Awdry himself claimed that it was a case of oversensitivity on the part of the race relations board; a complaint that was misinterpreted by some members of the public as meaning that he was a racist. To solve the problem, he changed the offending sentence to "as black as soot", which has been used in subsequent editions of the book

Might not be any sign of him on wikipedia any more (just 'there was something but we deleted it' crumbs), but that story is now the 4th result if you google David Bruce McMahan. So, he's not off the interwebs yet.

edit
and "D Bruce McMahan" goes straight to the Daddy's Girl and Daddy's Dog articles.
