Being able to drive, and holding a license, is a life skill.

it enables you to be one step closer to complete self-dependency
it opens doors to employment, that would otherwise be closed.
it is useful in emergency's
it prevents people thinking you are an immature manchild.

I finished getting my drivers licence at 27. Started at 15, wisely decided to give it a few years. Not everyone should be on the road

I agree with you, but that's really quite a nz-centric attitude. I lived in the UK for 7 years and didn't drive once (though admittedly, there was one time during that period, when I moved house and needed a van, I wished I had a license [my nz one had expired while overseas]).

One of my best mates still lives there and as far as I know has never, ever learned or drive or get any sort of license - he'd be about 27 now.

I imagine it's much the same in most big cities tbh (note: Auckland is not a big city)

Anyone who is born in New Zealand and doesn't have their full licence by 18 doesn't deserve to call themselves a Kiwi. Fuck - it's a right of passage.

I only have my learners car license that I reluctantly got last year because I felt stink that my fiance was driving us around when we went somewhere. If it weren't for her I'd still be happily carless, I hate them.

PS. I'm better than you.

Does not apply to Wellington. Where until the mid 2000's our buses were sufficiently good that a lot of people don't get their license until much later.

I got my full licence last year, and while I love having it (and driving/cars as a whole) I don't think it's necessary in a lot of places, and for people who don't like cars and driving it's probably unappealing.

I've had my full license since I was about 20 or so - no need for it prior to that. It expired recently and I haven't bothered to renew it as it's been age's since I've had to drive - only hassel there was on the ID side of things (as I don't have a passport either). Never had to drive for work, don't own a car, barely catch buses as it is (I walk pretty much everywhere).

My partner doesn't have her license and she's 35 (like me) - never held her back in anything (certainly not job related).

As a note to people saying it's a life skill - not having a license does not mean you do not have the ability to drive, just that you are not legally licensed to operate a vehicle - in an emergency situation the last thing you will be worried about is the legal status.
