Actually, I've never tried. It's never really been an issue, I almost never turn my phone off at all.

My new work phone, (Palm Treo Pro) you can't turn off to begin with.

I actually use an old cellphone as a backup alarm clock, it rings like 30mins after regular alarm clock just to make sure I get up. And the alarm works fine when it's off.

I've been involved in the Undie 500 and I've seen alot worse overseas (specifically Pamplona opening day this year) without so much whinging and complaining. Couches are burned and copious amounts of alcohol are drunk every weekend in Dunedin. Having 500 Canterbury students dressed up and driving in shitty cars doesn't change what happens down there. Having police turn up in riot gear and pepper spray everyone does.

yep, probably would be better if we had a change in thinking by the police, perhaps just have cops there to make sure people arent doing anything overly illegal, shit is going to happen, you may as well just be there to prevent fights, advise people to not burn shit, that would sure lessen the change of a riot, initially the cops will probably still get bottled/abused but over a few years, it idea would go from "enforcement" to "serve & protect", this would have to be a full NZ type change of practise/thinking.

whether or not that is attainable, who knows.

less aggression would hopefully lead to less aggression.

I know this is a bit hard to grasp, but how about just not do anything illegal in the first place.
