So what kind of shots should I be looking to make into HDR.. lots of various sources of light? dim lighting?

:D Thanks for +ve review. You're correct they're HDR, used the auto bracketing setting K10d has, Hardest thing about it is having a sturdy tripod. If it moves alittle then the pics dont line up and the result isnt as good eg:
Castle point(blury from tripod moving) Another one from castle point http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3062/...7be0324d_b.jpg |

Hdr comes in by taking both shots and combining them together, so you extend the range of white to black levels. To answer your question, the shots most suitable are those with a large dynamic range eg bright parts, and dark parts. Inside churches seems to be classic (bright windows, dark seats) A lot easier if the scene isn't moving. Sunsets Sunrises etc forests |

As awesome as those shots are (and they are indeed very cool), I am not a fan of HDR. That probably sounds hypocritical given I do post-process to some degree, but yeah... still what I think.
HDR is supposedly liked by people because it's "closer to what the human eye sees". But I disagree with that - to me it adds a very artificial 'fantastical' style to the image. I guess I just prefer what the camera sees. Still... let me reiterate; they are superb shots in their own right (composition, subject etc).

True. It's a combination of camera and photographer.
I guess all I'm trying to say is, I'm getting really jaded about digital photography - especially online, as I know exactly how easy it is to use 'trickery' to make an average shot look amazing. I've done it with my own photos - many times. I've amped up the fill light, contrast, clarity, saturation, cropped and rotated... and then posted on PBase, and had lots of comments about how amazing the shot is. Truth is... my original single exposure shot was probably not especially impressive. For a while there I even took photos knowing that I would 'fix it in the mix' - and I got really lazy. But that's the 'Stock Aitken Waterman' approach to photography, which I do not want. Granted - it takes skill to do a really nice post-processing job on a photo. But yeah.. just a personal preference.

That's a good part of why the most common two lenses I use nowadays are my fisheye, and even more then that, my lensbaby. It gives it a unique look that cannot really be replicated properly in post. Cleaned up? Sure, but when you get into using non-circular apertures etc, things get fun

i don't really see the argument against hdr. hdr photos portray an art. it's not like the photo is being used to document something.

Wow exo, I love that Nelson lakes shot!
Fantastic composition, and the water looks so still and clear. Did you use a polarising filter, or is that just the HDR effect? |

Do you have any high def. copies of those please exo they are stunning!

Sorry for the thread derail - this is supposed to be about pics, so:
Die Neues Museum, Berlin. For the record, that image is directly out of the camera. Zero post processing... not even cropping. I say that because I am ludicrously happy with the symmetry. If only I could replicate that all the time

I saw the Aberhart exhibition at Dunedin gallery, and it was very, very cool. He definitely has some incredible stuff. Although, I don't like everything he does. His 'Horizons' series for example - some are fantastic -some are just... well... a bock of grey.. and a block of lighter grey.
I'm sure I'm missing something, but yeah.

Tubby: Love the kea shot and the leaves - the kea because you got down to it's level and caught some of the curiosity that these birds are so famed for, and the leaves as the focal point hits where the light - and that central leaf - is just perfectly.

The only reason there's not-quite a focal point is because there was f-all light and the cam was hand-held - camera shake for the lose Shooting at f2 probably didn't help either But even still it's one of my fav shots - with some shots I feel a _slightly_ out of focus look actually enhances the shot, and with this I think if the microphone was sharper it would look too clinical. You'd hate the shot I'm about to post then...
