Yeah, but the "my life ain't really so bad" coffee is essentially retarded. That reasoning would make you perfectly happy to be the guy who empties out the cum buckets in a porno theatre for $10 an hour, because relative to an illiterate Somalian child who sees his family massacred and is forced to fight in a guerilla army or die of starvation things ain't really so bad.

I've been to various south american slums, and just done the NZ->Aus move.
It really sucks for those people, but I don't feel bad about what I've done for myself

Who was the NZGamer that basically wrote a guide on "moving to aussie"

I'm so tempted, looking for a new job & a new place in wellington recently, and the grass is certainly looking greener over the ditch

I've posted this before in a previous "let's all move to Aussie because of tax breaks and higher paying jobs!" thread that got baleeted: If your motivation for living somewhere comes down to money, then I just don't understand you (edit: other than "I can't afford to move anywhere" - which is understandable).

Aside from having more disposable income to buy more disposable plastic shit, can someone please tell me a genuine reason why "life is better" in Australia?

your answer is there..because "life" can be better if you are not afraid to take a chance.

"Life" here meaning your entire life; not just whats going on at this point in time, but whats going to be going on in 30 years time.

If you can move to a place that is still a great place to live (lets pick Aussie), only you can make more money and as a consequence possibly enjoy a better lifestyle and also secure your future, then that is surely one good motivation to move?

Maybe securing your future isnt important to you personally, or you are completely content , in which case you are correct, there is probably no reason to move whatsoever....

if , however, you are less than content with your circumstances, then a move is (possibly) a great idea...

Some people can feel trapped in their lives..moving can be a very good way to shape your life more to your taste (he says from experience) .. I've not yet regretted my choice to move out of NZ, even though I love NZ and the folks I left behind... moving has let me become a person I want to be rather than someone I wasn't keen on beeing, and it has also, in the course of about 3 years just about fully secured my future also.

I think everyone should give it a go...move to a new city / coutry for a couple of years and see what a difference it makes to your perspective.

All fair comments Nemises.

It's just that almost all the sentiment in these threads is related to money. You can call it 'securing your future' or 'enjoying a better lifestyle', but it's still all about making more cash cash.

For the record, I'm doing just fine in NZ financially, so I guess I have the luxury of not having to consider moving somewhere from a point of necessity. But I bet many of those people leaving were already doing "ok" in NZ before going over... we might get paid less on average but we're hardly a poor nation.

Oh, and also for the record, I lived in the UK for 3 years, and absolutely advocate people moving somewhere for the experience and the different perspective. But it was never about money for me - if it was I'd probably still be there. I came home mostly because I was missing my family - I just couldn't handle getting emails about my niece's 1st birthday and I hadn't even met her in person. Our family is pretty close though... so... yeah.

I have frequent pangs to move back to the UK/Europe - but simply because it's just so fantastic over there (in many ways... definitely not all). If I do go back I would consider taking a big pay-cut if I had to.

My thoughts exactly. If my plan to go and live in London fails then I'm off to Aussie and not coming back to NZ. I guess for different people, different things? NZ has got very little to offer in terms of financial security (when I do end up working full-time) and I too suffer from the "grass is greener...' syndrome

the consumerism mantra?

the problem with always wanting more is that you are never satisfied. also as already mentioned your happiness is feeble as it is dependent on your neighbor having less than you.

the crux of the matter is that if material things are so important to you than as a result financial security will be a lot harder to obtain.

this thread is a perfect example of how the the billion-dollar advertising/media industry is a powerful tool of consumerism

don't get me wrong, i will probably return to NZ in the future. I just don't fancy doing such a big jump right now. From major city to small city.

NZ is home.

They aren't?

The only point of money is to spend it. Otherwise it just sits there.

we are all consumers to different degrees. im questioning how much peoples spending is controlled by external influences such as the norms & expectations of media, culture, society, traditions, parents etc.

rather than ignorant - i believe this deconstruction of my behaviour to be quite freeing

the consumerism mantra is not just to consume;
but: MORE MORE MORE

to have more stuff, or to have more money just for the sake of it...
its all the same thing

i think many (most?) people go to oz because they feel they dont have enough here, or that they can have more there.

when i talk to people thinking about moving its usually:
"i'll get paid MORE...I can afford MORE stuff... i'll get MORE sunlight"

when they live there, theyre still the same...
plus they keep trying to justify their decision

having more wont make you happy
unless its MORE happy

what is all this neighbour shit, i have no idea what my neighbour has cos i live in an apartment building. he could have a fucking boat and 10 supermodels in there and i wouldnt know.

I don't like having money to buy whatever my neighbour or mate has. if i cared about money to that extent i would have gone and worked with my dad, like my brother did. he earned fuckloads of money and enjoyed it (then spent it all, but hey)

I just want to get more money for what I enjoy doing. I also wouldn't mind seeing what its like, new experiences/people etc etc. more money means i have more freedom to do the things i enjoy... if thats being a consumer whore then sign me up!

My genes like me having money because money equals a good house in a safe area, access to high-quality education and healthcare for my offspring, and the ability to devote time and attention to the growth and development of my offspring.

xcept many people have a mortgage instead of money,
and the majority of their time and attention is directed to their job instead of their family.

I'm guessing you're one of those people that thinks he has to spend his entire paycheck before his next one and ends up having $2 in his bank account day before he gets paid again.

However, some people are actually smart with their money. I want money so I can invest it, and retire when I'm 35 while I continue making money from my investments, and not having to be a slave at a shitty job.
If I get paid more, I can save up more, and retire earlier. Not to spend money on useless consumer crap that you seem to be believe is the only purpose of money.

And what Simon said. Having money means you get to live better. If you're happy in your mud shack and op shop clothes, that's fine by me since it means less competition for smart people like me.
Mediocrity for the lose
