Yeah, I just found that one myself. Unless he's got a good source, then he's wrong... or imported something that attracts a different kind of duty. I wish people wouldn't perpetuate this "my mate gary said this guy down the pub reckons it's a $200 threshold now" shit.

What if its declared as a gift? If my cousin is sending it to me as a Xmas present surely no duty needs to be paid on it?

Gifts are items sent from persons abroad to persons resident in New Zealand that are unsolicited by the recipient and relate to a special occasion such as a birthday, wedding or Christmas.
If the value of the gift is no more than NZ$110, it can be imported free of Customs charges. If the gift is worth more than NZ$110, Customs charges will be payable on the value of the gift that is worth more than NZ$110.

Fuck thats like $140 for a $600 phone + freight. I know of lots of people that have bought iPhone 4S's when they first came out from eBay and just paid the auction price and never had to pay gst or duty.
How do customs have the time to inspect every single package that comes in?

So Electronics have fuck all duty but good luck buying ONE win8 phone for less than $400 NZD incl freight. " The Retailers Association has lobbied the Government to remove the $400 tax-free threshhold that applies to most overseas purchases, arguing it is unfair on local retailers, who must charge GST on all sales. A lower threshhold, starting at $240, kicks in on products that still attract import duty, such as clothes, shoes and jewellery. " http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/indu...arding-service

That was what customs told me, but anyway it may have been just to do with my specific imports. Either way my humblest..

Are there any phones comparable to the S3 out? Or is the S3 the best pick currently for Android?

I was looking at that one before and it seems strikingly similar to the S3, but I also ready it has a heap of HTC bloatware and the battery life is incomaprable to the S3.
I'm done with iPhones I think, but it's extremely hard to find a phone with a sleek UI like the iOS as well as a great camera. |

Nexus 4 @ $299 USD just sneaks in under the $400 threshold (Assuming it weighs less than 500g).

That nexus 4 looks really great but the camera seems slightly iffy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IZIG-YnLhE There's one example, I saw another one in 1080p and it was still pretty ugly, I'm yet to find photos though but it doesn't seem like it's on par with the iPhone or S3. Why can't they just make the S3 in normal person size!? |
