Caff, how did you get the rayed-looking lights? I try that and tend to get blurry blobs

Completely by accident
I read somewhere (after taking that shot) that it's a result of using large apertures on a lens that has a small-ish number of aperture elements. In other words, instead of the aperture being a circle, it's decagonal, or dodecagonal or something (the reverse is that the smaller the aperture, the more like a circle it will be)... so it creates the 'ray' effect on point light sources through diffraction. Some people look at it as a negative thing... I quite like it. So I guess... try using larger apertures?

I no longer have my Exif info for that shot, I took it a while ago now It would have been shot with a Canon 10D and a Canon 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5 I would have done a bit of PP in photoshop which would have consisted of running an S curve through and an increase in Saturation. Now days with my photos I tend to Desaturate rather than saturate as this is the effect I like. Do you guys have an online presence for your photos? I keep mine up on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/vertphoto/ |

Cheers. It was just ambient light on an overcast day at botanical gardens in Wellington. There is a fairly minimal increase in fill light, contrast and saturation in Lightroom.
I also took one with flash - but that image somehow loses a lot of the feel, with either the background becoming too dark or the fern blowing out depending on what I did in LR.
