What if I bought something on my cool android phone, it worked, then my phone told me it needed an upgrade, and now the app doesn't work because the app wasn't compatible with that version of Android?

Is that somehow better?

I don't think it happens ... I could be wrong, but pretty sure every app I've ever used has been updated as new versions come out.

Cool I'll just pick one at random then, TradeMe app, only available on iPhone 3GS and above

Just because you haven't 'encountered' it before doesn't mean it doesnt happen.

EDIT: Actually thats not a fair example, it was never available on that OS, it wasn't available and then suddenly UNAVAILABLE.

We're talking about phones that are over 3 years old dude. That's like saying 'Oh man I just brought the latest *<insert graphics heavy FPS game here>* AND IT WON'T RUN ON MY 3 YEAR OLD LAPTOP, FFS WHY CAN'T EVERYTHING JUST BE COMPATIBLE'

Seriously if you're going to get narky on wazza for making a stupid argument, don't do the very same thing yourself.

Yep calm down TnT i pretty much edited my post straight away and said it wasn't a fair comparison it'll be okay :P

I know as much about Android as I do about iOS so I can't even comment on whether what Cyberbob suggested even happens on Android.

Cool, got an actual example of this happening or just hypothesising that it's possible that this could potentially maybe be an issue on Android?

Again with the fragmentation lols. Version conflicts are a problem that iOS just doesn't have, because almost everyone updates to the latest version of the OS the moment it's available, because it's available to everyone worldwide instantly. This means the developers can code for the latest version of iOS because that's what almost everyone uses.

Android 4 has been out since what, October last year? And it has been installed on what, 3% of eligible handsets?

I thought it had only just officially started rolling out in the last few weeks.

Yes the fragmentation must be a fucking nightmare for devs, must be awesome fun fielding all the bugs for multiple manufacturers/versions.

No. With Android you can release the same app more than once too. The fact that paid apps have been released by evil buggers as free apps with malware encoded into them makes this abundantly clear. You could sell one version of the app called 'HD' and lock it down to only certain tablets, and then release one locked down to only certain phones, and it would work the same way. It's just not so clearly and cleanly delineated by device class, as it is in the iTunes App Store, with 'iPad', 'iPhone', or 'Universal' (being both).

Apple make envious margins on their iPhones

The cost to produce the Lumia 900 is $217. Retail pricing is at $449.99.

In comparison, the iPhone 4S has a materials cost of $188 and a retail price of $650.

The Samsung SII Android Phone costs $235.50 in materials and is sold for $549.99.

Pretty sweet position to be in. If they ever felt threatened they could comfortably drop their price by 20%

I agree, it's an awesome position to be in.
People will pay whatever they think it's worth. They're not going to change their spending habits just because they are suddenly told that xyz product has a huge markup.

Sony announces Android wristwatch

The jokes, they write themselves.

In other news, Sony Corp this week reported a record $6.4 billion annual net loss, double its earlier forecast and a fourth straight year of red ink.
