What if I bought something on my cool android phone, it worked, then my phone told me it needed an upgrade, and now the app doesn't work because the app wasn't compatible with that version of Android?
Is that somehow better?

Cool I'll just pick one at random then, TradeMe app, only available on iPhone 3GS and above
Just because you haven't 'encountered' it before doesn't mean it doesnt happen. EDIT: Actually thats not a fair example, it was never available on that OS, it wasn't available and then suddenly UNAVAILABLE.

Yep calm down TnT i pretty much edited my post straight away and said it wasn't a fair comparison it'll be okay :P
I know as much about Android as I do about iOS so I can't even comment on whether what Cyberbob suggested even happens on Android.

Again with the fragmentation lols. Version conflicts are a problem that iOS just doesn't have, because almost everyone updates to the latest version of the OS the moment it's available, because it's available to everyone worldwide instantly. This means the developers can code for the latest version of iOS because that's what almost everyone uses.
Android 4 has been out since what, October last year? And it has been installed on what, 3% of eligible handsets? |

Yes the fragmentation must be a fucking nightmare for devs, must be awesome fun fielding all the bugs for multiple manufacturers/versions.

Apple make envious margins on their iPhones
The cost to produce the Lumia 900 is $217. Retail pricing is at $449.99. In comparison, the iPhone 4S has a materials cost of $188 and a retail price of $650. The Samsung SII Android Phone costs $235.50 in materials and is sold for $549.99. Pretty sweet position to be in. If they ever felt threatened they could comfortably drop their price by 20%
