Kiwisaver contributions (assuming 4% level) will put the percentage-of-gross-wage result pretty much equal with Australia, mind you. (If their tax levels are still the same as in 2005, anyway - I can't remember if Rudd said anything about tax rates when he was elected.)

I'm not sure exactly what goes into the total "labour cost" figure, but I think the percentage taken up there will still be a bit less than Australia; just not by much.

A) is always contentious, but basically, people seem adverse to comparing apples with apples - in this case, New Zealand's income tax covers social security also, while Australia's income tax doesn't, that comes from payroll taxes which are usually not factored in.
Yeah but the government actually gives something back to the community in Australia. For example, if I buy a water efficient washing machine I get a $150 cash-back. I don't have to pay $11.95 for 4 rubbish bags per week and If I decided to invest in a house I get a $10k grant to kick it off.

It's that kind of shit that you would never get back home that makes Australia a better place to live. I honestly don't care if I'm paying 2% more in tax, because here I actually see where my money goes. In NZ I see my money goes into .. the Maori Channel?

For someone who states that you are awfully proud of where you came from, you sure do rub the whole mass emmigration thing in a lot.

It just shows NZ having the least amount of taxed income in comparison to other OECD countries. ie. Belgium pay a lot of tax on gross income...

However, I don't think these countries have GST, and student loans etc., so it's not a good comparison.

Got a mate who worked as a geologist in Aus for 6 months last year. Made about $300 a day and made enough money to fund his whole postgrad study & living costs for this year.

He worked with a driller who was on $1k a day (who got taxed 50%! :O).

Big money in mining.

I love NZ, but want to spread my wings a bit and see what the rest of the world is like.

If you add GST to NZ then the tax will go up to about 30% but to still make it a good comparison you would have to add GST to all the other countries that use it - like Australia, some states in the US, UK etc.

In other words - it's a good enough comparison to show that NZ is less taxed than most other OECD countries.

It waters your argument down a little from this lofty position:

For sure. But thats kinda a good reason to go. Easy move

You can't buy beer on sundays i think. So you gotta do the small supply in the closet next to the front door thing.

Its hot. Insects are bigger/more deadly, water tastes like crap (if there is enough to go round) In NSW they have the worst cars. Crimes worse too.

They are racist mo-fos too.

I saw James Boags in the supermarket in Wellington when I was there over xmas.
$9 for a 6-pack!
That shit costs $18 in Aussie - and they had to import it to get it in NZ as well!

Beer in Australia is a rip.

i considered moving to australia years ago because i thought the grass was greener there...
so went for a holiday to have a look....
but the grass was brown and there were watering restrictions.

anyway, NZ is not as consumed by consumerism as most other places, and hippies like it here.

living here is awesome.

It waters your argument down a little from this lofty position:
It hasn't in anyway, shape or form changed the data supplied or the bias. Nor has it changed the fact that you still get to pay more tax is Australia overall which is what the hoohaa is all about.

BTW, most countries in the OECD have some form of value added tax (GST)
Quote:
Of the twenty-nine OECD countries which levy a value added tax (VAT)
So even going 'add this, take that' makes little or no difference anyway.
