Nice one Oddity....but you should still kick the fucker out, that sort of invasion of privacy and trust is flat-out BAD.
I have a beautiful picture on my hard drive (no host sorry), made by a friend of mine, who had a similar problem.....flatmate busting into his room when he was away etc etc, looking thru all his stuff etc etc. My friend, who I'll call "Brendan" took a lovely series of motion-triggered pictures using a wee logitech camera, put them into a montage complete with witty captions, and then emailed the pics to everyone in his address book. So the guy was totally busted, and pretty publicly humiliated, but the sneaky bitch kept coming in when Brendan was out at night. He won't change, Od. Kick the fucker out and be done with him. |

But Mr Melon's GF does have four breasts, right? Isn't that why Biggus tried to set her on fire? Or was he just trying to get the $2 of frogs for free?

It cant be as bad as my friends flatmate.
6 person flat and the flat account was under his name and this other girls name. One day they noticed that their wasnt enouhg money to buy groceries... everyone thought ok sweet put more money in. Then my mate noticed that they wernt getting any bank statements. So he went to the bank and asked why they werent getting any... banks told him otherwise... he asked if their was any weird out going payments... quite a few... where are they going... i cant tell you sir... is it going to this persons named account?... whilst nodding... I cant tell you sir... ok can we get the last 3 months statements sent to the house... sure. Time goes by... no statements... rings bank... where are my statements.. theyve been sent a while back...i havent got them and explains situation... ok sir different address this time... yes please... this costing like $2.50 a page. Well ends up she had been using her phone banking and slowly removed $500 which she replied with... i didnt steal from you guys... but ill pay that money if you think i did... she moved straight out.

Irony:
Buying a fifty dollar webcam to stop someones stealing a few bucks worth of chocolate.... But seriously, why didn't you just call a general flat "meeting" and say "someone's nicking my chocolate and it's not on."? I thought people living together could kind of, you know, be honest with each other? Like you said, he took it rather well, I don't see the need to set up a bleedin' camera on him. However... PWNED. |

Damn Greasy Flatmates from Hamilton
Well I have a similar tale to tell. I didn't get the guy on camera or anything I walked in on him.
I used to flat with Cevin and a guy who we named 'Hamilton', I won't post his alias as I think he is a member of this Forum. Anyway one day I came home from work and my door was shut with the light on. I was thinking hmm I didn't leave the light on. I opened the door and walked in. Hamilton was sitting on the end of my bed watching one of the porn flicks I had rented. He turned around smiled and said "How Was Work?" Bewildered that this was happening I replied "Good". He got up, left the room and that was that. Sneaky little ferrit. I couldn't find any discharge or anything but I was horrified at what I'd discovered. My sanctuary was violated. |

So your mentality for people stealing from others is "well, it's your fault for having something to steal in the first place!" |

Web Cam Question
How did he determin if there was motion?
I was thinking about this last night since i've been playing around with directshow etc. So far all i've been able to come up with is checking all the pixels for color change and give them a certain error % for changes in light. |

My point was that in normal circumstances sure they shouldn't be stealing it and you shouldn't have to lock it or anything, but if alcoholism etc is coming into the picture then it's not a normal circumstance.
But yeah, hope they turned out ok. |

I thought a better way was to split an image into say 16 or 64 areas, and average the RGB pixel values of these areas, then compare that with the next image, allowing for a degree of fuzziness?

The guy would not have owned up without having cold hard proof shoved in his face. i now know this for a fact. So all that would have resulted from a flat meeting would have been everyone pleading ignorance and the thievery stopping... maybe. I dont know about you, but i can't live with that level of paranoia and uncertainty. from me saying "Are you sure there isn't something you want to tell me?", it took 5 solid minutes of him being evasive and playing dumb "aaah i dont know what you mean man, help me out here", and he only owned up once i told him the cam was connected to The Internet. I haven't even shown him the footage. I have footage of him coming back in later that night and tracing the cam cable and discovering the pc under the bed, so he knew damn well what was going on :/ And it's not about the money. This guy was invading my private space. I put the candy in my wardrobe for a reason. Pantry i can kind of understand, but when he began raiding my bedroom he crossed a line. Everyone who has ever flatted or been flatting implicitly understand this. |

And you're not kicking him out why Oddity? I'm failing to see a good reason for this guy, whom is a liar and a thief, to be allowed to stay.

Agreed. IMO, flatting is about trust. If you get to the point where you have to lock everything up, you've lost.
