IMO the US President isn't about skill, knowledge or even raw intelligence (although those all help) - the president is there as a special effect to distract the populace while everyone else gets on with running the country into the ground in the name of their own special interests.

The US doesn't like strong presidents. They like easily manipulable but fairly personable idiots like George W Bush & (potentially) Sarah Palin.

The last truly strong pres was Clinton - I don't actually think Obama is of that calibre (although he's certainly a heck of a lot better than GWB), and it's that weakness which may let Obama squeeze through in the next election.
